Clinton’s 1,600 relay team ended the WIAA Division 2 boys state track and field meet Saturday with a bang.

The foursome of Jackson Nelson, Brice Enright, Tyler Stauss and Zach Krause held off Lodi by less than a second to win a state title.

Clinton finished with a time of 3:22.58, with Lodi right behind at 3:23.31. The Cougars finished fifth overall in the team standings, as Clayton Hahn added to the team total with a third-place finish in shot put. The senior threw 52 feet, 9.25 inches.

Zartman and Oren earn medals

Brock Zartman brought home a pair of medals Saturday. The Edgerton senior was second in the 100 and third in the 200. He lost both races to Kenneth Bednarek of Rice Lake, who broke the all-division state record in the 200 and 400 in Friday’s preliminaries.

“I knew it was basically a race for second place in both races, but it was still pretty cool to run against him,” Zartman said of Bednarek. “I hung with him both races until he pulled away at the end.

“But I did what I came up here to do and that was medal in both events. It means my hard work paid off.”

Oren finished her illustrious prep career with 11 medals. The senior was sixth in the 200 after winning high jump and long jump titles Friday.

Brodhead/Juda senior standout Madee Harding had a great day in Saturday’s D2 finals. She was second in the 400, third in the 200 and anchored the Cardinals’ fourth-place 1,600 relay team. Harding’s teammate, Cora Purdue, was sixth in the 400 and also ran on the 1,600 relay team.

Brekan Day of Brodhead/Juda, who won the boys Division 2 high jump title last year, finished fourth in the event Saturday.

Alexandria Demco of Walworth Big Foot/Williams Bay was second in the 800, while the Chiefs’ David Martin was fourth in the 110 high hurdles.

Whitewater’s 800 relay team of Tyler Sheffield, Will Leibbrand, Popke, Jack Mayer was fifth in 1:31.07.
