According to Janesville Craig High gymnastics coach Jean Welch, we are squarely in the “dog days” of the winter sports season.

She’s not wrong.

For area gymnasts, conference and sectional meets are still weeks away. The dual season continues to drag on.

A fresh release of the Wisconsin High School Gymnastics Association Honor Roll, a bi-weekly list of the state’s best individual and team scores, can be a boost to teams and athletes eager to see how they stack up to the rest of the state.

In the Jan. 31 honor roll, several area teams stacked up pretty well.

Elkhorn Area High is ranked No. 5 in Division 2 and hasn’t budged from that spot in any of the first three honor rolls. Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker were ranked 16th and 20th, respectively, in Division 1. It was the first time this season either team had been ranked. The Burlington co-op, which features several Lake Geneva Badger gymnasts, is ranked No. 2 in Division 1.

Elkhorn coach Amanda Lockhart said she hasn’t had any issues keeping her team focused this season. The Elks are eyeing their first state berth since 2011.

“The honor rolls are great motivation for the girls,” Lockhart said in an email to The Gazette. “Although we know that not all the teams in the state submit their scores, it is still fun to see the teams included and where we stand.

“There is a lot of excitement around our program this year, and the girls continue to stay motivated.”

Elkhorn names litter the individual rankings, as well, with freshman Brianna Taylor (17th) and senior Cameron Jacobson (19th) both owning top-20 scores in the all-around.

Taylor is ranked fifth in Division 2 in the floor routine. She’s shown plenty of promise in her first varsity season.

“We have been working on different combinations of skills to maximize her score,” Lockhart said. “She has a lot of potential and some high-level skills that she’s working her way back to.”

Jacobson missed qualifying for state on the balance beam by 0.025 points at last year’s Waterford Sectional, and Lockhart said the senior is determined to end her career with a trip to Wisconsin Rapids.

Three Craig individuals, sophomores Phoebe Werner (vault, T28) and Ariyana Stalsberg (vault, T34; floor, T48) and freshman Gracie Hill (beam, T43), made their way onto the latest D1 honor roll.

“It definitely is a boost to confidence,” Welch said. “There’s always work to be done. We’re really happy with the way the girls have progressed this year.”

Parker senior Carson Richards is tied for 49th in vault.

Two Lake Geneva Badger gymnasts, sophomore Regan Cassidy (fourth) and freshman Ava Trent (10th) are in the top 10 in the individual all-around rankings for the Burlington/Badger/Union Grove/Wilmot co-op.

The Burlington co-op and state No. 1 Franklin/Muskego/Oak Creek/Whitnall—the two-time reigning Division 1 champion—will be the favorites to advance from the Waukesha West Sectional on Feb. 22, a meet that also will include state No. 3 Waukesha West/Waukesha North/Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial, Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker.

Elkhorn will head to the Whitefish Bay Sectional on Feb. 23.

State rankings only mean so much at this point in the winter season. They’re based solely on reported scores, and they aren’t an indicator of future performances.

“It’s fun to look at, but you can’t read too much into them,” Welch said.

Still, it’s nice for area gymnasts to earn some recognition. Now, they have to go out and finish the season strong.
