Janesville Craig’s girls soccer team didn’t score Thursday night, but the Cougars still wrapped up a tie for third place in the Big Eight Conference.
The Cougars fought to a scoreless draw with host Verona. Both teams finished 5-1-3 in conference play, and first-place Middleton (7-0-1) plays second-place Sun Prairie (6-1-1) on Tuesday night.
“Verona’s game plan was trying to bully us off the field, and it worked in the first half. They had majority of possession,” Craig assistant coach Garrett McCabe said. “But we’re happy with how our players responded. In games like that, it can be easy to give in and just defend and try to weather the storm.
“We have a fighter’s mentality, and once that happened, we dictated.”
McCabe said Craig dominated possession in the second half and had several good scoring chances. But Verona keeper Rachel Nelson slammed the door shut when she needed to.
“We came out more aggressive and fought back,” McCabe said. “We had better possession and locked them in. They have a really strong center back that cleaned up most of the chances we had, but we were knocking on the door.”
Craig keeper Abbey Schrader made five saves to also earn a clean sheet.
Craig plays at Watertown in nonconference action Tuesday.

We’ve got a lot to build on and build for, and the girls are holding their heads high because they’re committed to that.”
