For the first time in program history, the Rock County Fury have clinched the Badger Conference championship.

The achievement was made possible for the area’s girls co-op hockey team thanks to a 6-0 victory over the host Madison Metro Lynx on Thursday.

“I am very proud of the girls for working hard and their dedication to themselves, the coaches and the team on and off the ice,” Fury head coach Luke Steurer said.

Maggy Henschler (Milton High) opened the scoring on a penalty-shot goal midway through the first period, and the Fury headed into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead thanks to a Haley Knauf goal.

Henschler and Einbeck tallied goals in the second to put the Fury ahead by four after two periods of play. Another from Einbeck and a final tally from Dani Heitsman (Milton) ended the game.

“It was a huge win for the girls tonight,” Steurer said. “Middleton came out fast, but we were able to pick up the pace after a couple minutes of each period and play our game. It was an aggressive game on both sides. We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game and our team stepped up to the challenge.”

McKaylie Buescher (Milton) recorded a 25-save shutout and now leads the state’s starting goalies in wins (17), goals against average (1.00), save percentage (.945), and shutouts (11).

The Fury went 3 of 4 on the power play and improved to 17-2-2 with the win.

Rock County plays at Black River Falls on Saturday.
