The Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker girls golf teams have seen plenty of each other this season.

They’ve entered many of the same tournaments and produced awfully close scores, leading to a budding rivalry.

“It’s a fun crosstown rivalry, so it’s fun to see how everybody does,” Craig sophomore Kallie Lux said Tuesday. “Me and (Parker senior) Sophia (Dooman) have been really close, too.”

In a Big Eight Conference triangular at Glen Erin on Tuesday, they couldn’t have been any closer, each shooting rounds of 90.

But it was the Cougars who came out on top, shooting 386 to edge Sun Prairie by five strokes and beat Parker by 13.

“The girls played through some unpleasant conditions today, considering the heat and mosquitoes,” Craig coach Alex Schaar said.

“It was great to see Lauren (Dammen), Morgan (Knilans) and Madi (Loveland) play their best rounds of the year to help us walk away with two wins.”

The mosquitoes were bad enough that some players barely even lined up their putts on the 18th green.

Sun Prairie’s Sydney O’Hearn shot 85 to take medalist honors, while Lux and Dooman tied for second.

The city teams’ No. 1 players each said admitted they aren’t playing their best just past the season’s midway point but are hopeful to get back on track.

“The last couple weeks I’ve been in the 90s,” Lux said. “Probably just my irons. I’ve been struggling with them but am getting them figured out.”

“I started off pretty strong, but have just had some blow-up rounds,” said Parker’s Dooman. “My chipping and putting have been great. I just get into some trouble.”

Both players expressed optimism that their teams’ best golf is ahead of them.

“We’ve been playing a lot better (as a team) than last year,” Lux said. “I love this team. I feel like we take things seriously on the course, but when we’re away from it we have fun.”

“I think we’re going to do pretty good and still have a real chance,” Dooman said. “I’m pretty excited.”
