Janesville Craig’s girls basketball team suffered another second-half setback Friday night.
The Cougars led by 10 at halftime and 18 in the opening minutes of the second half but lost 75-69 in a Big Eight Conference game at Madison La Follette.
Craig fell to 7-6 overall and 4-6 in league play. La Follette has the exact same records.
“We’ve got to learn to finish and play 36 minutes,” Cougars coach Kerry Storbakken said. “We’re not doing that. We’ve got to play the entire game.”
The Cougars have lost three of their last four games and had second-half leads—two of them double-digit advantages—in every game during that stretch.
Craig was up 37-27 at halftime and quickly made two 3-point baskets and another field goal out of the break to push the lead to 45-27.
But the Lancers stormed back from there, thanks in large part to free-throw shooting. They shot just 65 percent from the line but finished with a whopping 43 attempts.
“A lot of fouls, a lot of free throws. We were in foul trouble all night and had three starters foul out,” Storbakken said. “It seemed like every time they had the ball in the second half, a foul was called.”
Sophomores Hannah Dunlavy and Cassie Goswick led Craig with 19 and 18 points, respectively.
Kaytlin Eder led all scorers with 25 points for La Follette.
Craig hosts Madison Edgewood in a nonconference game Tuesday night.
