Brodhead/Juda’s Gunner Boegli scores on a 51-yard touchdown off a tipped pass during their second-round playoff game with Richland Center in Brodhead on Friday.

BRODHEAD

It was still anyone’s game at halftime of Friday night’s WIAA Division 5 playoff opener between Brodhead/Juda and Watertown Luther Prep.

But the unbeaten Cardinals scored with the opening possession of the third quarter and never looked back, getting four touchdowns from senior running back Gage Boegli on their way to a 42-13 victory.

Brodhead/Juda (10-0) outscored the Phoenix 28-6 after halftime to pull away from a modest 14-7 halftime lead.

The Cardinals’ pounding rushing attack took its toll in the second half, Luther Prep head coach Justin Gregorius said.

“They’ve got some really good backs,” Gregorius said. “They were able to wear us down.”

Brodhead/Juda coach Jim Matthys said halftime adjustments made all the difference for his team.

“We were able to take away some of the things they were doing in the first half,” Matthys said.

That was especially true with the Cardinals’ quick-pitch play, Matthys said.

Brodhead/Juda drew first blood when senior quarterback Cole Hoesly connected with Gunner Boegli on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left in the first quarter.

Luther Prep (5-5) responded early in the second quarter, getting a 22-yard run from Josiah Moore early in the second quarter.

The Cardinals took the lead for keeps a few minutes later when Boegli scored on a 10-yard run.

In the second half, it was all Cardinals until late, as Boegli scored on runs of 59, 15 and 8 yards and junior Aidyn Vondra took an option pitch to the end zone from 40 yards out.

Luther Prep got its final score with no time left when senior quarterback Marcus Fitzsimmons threw a 1-yard TD pass to senior receiver Jeremiah Stanton.

Hoesly, who also kicked four extra points and threw a two-point conversion to sophomore running back Blake Matthys, said the key to the Cardinals’ success so far—and into the rest of their playoff run—is their preparation.

“In order to win on Friday night, you have to win Monday through Thursday in practice,” Hoesly said.

Hoesly called his own number early and often against Luther Prep, getting several key first downs to keep drives alive.

Brodhead/Juda, seeded second in its zone, will play a second-round game against Richland Center at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Hornets were 31-23 winners over sixth-seeded Prairie du Chien to open the playoffs. Brodhead/Juda took a 47-10 victory over Richland Center in Week 4.
