Verona High’s boys soccer team maintained its grip on first place in the Big Eight Conference with a 6-1 win Thursday over Janesville Craig.

Samuel Abreu scored twice, while four other players connected for goals as the Wildcats (7-1-1, 3-0-0 Big Eight) stayed perfect in league play. The Cougars (5-5-0 overall, 1-2-0 Big Eight) suffered their third straight loss.

“The score didn’t really reflect the entire game,” Craig coach Garrett McCabe said. “Some softer goals and two penalty kicks (were) scored against us.”

Ivan Pacheco scored at 69:41 to put Craig on the board. Abreu’s second goal at 83:55 completed the scoring.

The Cougars host Mukwonago on Saturday before welcoming Sun Prairie on Thursday.
