A strong second half led Janesville Craig’s boys soccer team to a Big Eight Conference road victory Tuesday.

The Cougars scored twice after halftime on their way to a 3-1 win over Madison La Follette.

“We had to shore up our defense and be better defensively. We were trying to go for the home run pass every time, and it was too predictable,” Craig coach Garrett McCabe said of his team’s first-half effort. “We were able to break them apart in the second half, and our two goals in the second were really well orchestrated.”

After a Brian Elliott goal in the second minute, McCabe said his Cougars let off the gas a bit. La Follette tied the game in the 19th minute and pressured the Cougars immensely to end the first half.

“We were able to hold it to a tie to end the half, but we needed to be tougher,” McCabe said.

The Cougars made some adjustments and were rewarded in a big way in the second half.

They got a goal from Alan Pacheco, off an assist from Gabe Rubine, just over 11 minutes out of halftime, and Len Lorenz gave Craig an insurance goal in the 78th minute.

Ty Bienema finished with three saves for the Cougars, who visit Lodi in a nonconference match Friday.
