Ty Bienema did all he could to suppress the offensive firepower of the Beloit Memorial Purple Knights in a Big Eight Conference boys soccer clash Tuesday.

Unfortunately for Janesville Craig, the rest of the team had an “off” night, according to coach Garrett McCabe.

After stopping everything in the first half, Bienema and the visiting Cougars surrendered three goals in the latter half and dropped the match 3-0.

“They were just a better team than us tonight,” McCabe said. “We didn’t have it. Our first touch was off, our movements were off and we weren’t strong on the ball.”

The two teams played to a scoreless tie after the first half. The Purple Knights opened the scoring in the 62nd minute on a Bernardo Plascenia header. Beloit Memorial added two more headers later in the half.

“All three of their goals were headers,” McCabe said. “We weren’t marking properly in the box and not challenging them, so they scored pretty easily on them.”

Bienema racked up six saves for the Cougars, who fell to 4-2 on the season.

“(Bienema) has really stepped up as a force inside the box for us. There was nothing more he could have done tonight. He did his job,” McCabe said. “For the rest of us, this was a good learning experience, I think.”

Craig will attempt to make adjustments prior to hosting a clash with crosstown rival Janesville Parker at 7 p.m. Thursday.
