One offsides call kept Janesville Craig from taking the lead Thursday night.

Minutes later, a non-call led to the Cougars falling behind Madison West.

The 11th-seeded Cougars hung tough with their sixth-seeded Big Eight Conference rivals, but West went on to a 2-0 victory in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal at Madison College.

Craig appeared to take the lead midway through the first half, but its goal was wiped away on an offsides call. Then, in the 42nd minute, the Regents tallied when they broke in one-on-one with a near-offsides moment of their own.

No call was made, and the 1-0 lead held up until West added insurance with just over nine minutes remaining in the match.

“Score aside, this was the best game the boys played all season,” Craig coach Garrett McCabe said. “We were dynamic and controlled the tempo of the game.

“Losing is never easy, especially when it ends your season, but the boys can hold their heads up knowing they gave 100 percent.”

Ty Bienema made seven saves for Craig in the loss.

West advanced to play at third-seeded Oconomowoc in the regional finals.
