Thursday night was a good one for junior Ben Coulter and the Janesville Bluebirds’ special teams.

The city’s high school boys co-op hockey team clinched its fourth win of the season, defeating host Baraboo/Portage 6-2.

Coulter got the action going with a wrap-around goal just five minutes into the game before he fed teammate Tyler Kobs on a 3-on-2 rush just three minutes later to take a two-goal lead.

“We got the puck to the net early, and Ben (Coulter) got us started nicely,” Bluebirds head coach John Mauermann said.

Coulter scored another goal in the second to regain a two-goal cushion at 3-1. Janesville added two more goals in the middle frame off the sticks of Nik Sitter and Conner Joyce to take a 5-1 lead into the final period. The teams traded goals once there.

The Bluebirds killed a long 5-on-3 penalty kill in the second frame, one that saw goalie Owen Aldrich face half of his shots for the game.

“We killed a few penalties to put the pressure on, and we took advantage of our opportunities on the man-advantage,” Mauermann said. “We were putting pucks on net and we played well.”

Coulter finished with two goals and two assists for the Bluebirds, who improved to 4-14 with the win. Kobs finished with a goal and two assists, and Aldrich recorded 22 saves in the win.

The Bluebirds play a Big Eight game at Middleton on Tuesday night.
