A frustrating start quickly turned into a rough outing for the Janesville Bluebirds on Thursday night.
The city’s boys high school co-op hockey team suffered a 7-1 loss to host Madison West.
The Bluebirds (1-3) gave up a goal just 48 seconds into the game, and the scoreboard read 6-0 just seven minutes into the first period.
“We can’t keep giving up goals in the first minute,” head coach John Mauermann said. “We turned the puck over and gave them an opportunity on the first goal, and from there a lot of things went wrong, and we found ourselves in a big hole.”
West scored the lone goal of the second period before the Bluebirds got on the board in the third period with a Cayden Erickson goal.
Erickson took a pass from Jackson Lyons before splitting the defensemen and scoring on a wrist shot that beat Regents goaltender Ian Hedican on the glove side.
“Nice effort from Jackson to get the pass to Cayden, who came to the slot and ripped the forehand into the net,” Mauermann said. “We could’ve used more of that earlier in the game. We’ve had some opportunities early in games, but we can’t buy a goal.”
The Bluebirds host Baraboo on Tuesday.
