Five notable area high school sports performances from the past week and five events to watch for over the next seven days:
Matt Zimmerman, Janesville Parker golf—The senior has been red-hot to start the golf season. He shot a 4-under 68, two shots off the program’s individual record, in helping the Vikings shoot 301 (three shots off the team record) in a home Big Eight match Thursday. On Friday, he took medalist honors at The Oaks, shooting a 70 in the team’s first tournament this year.
Dawson Vance, Lake Geneva Badger baseball—The Badgers senior helped his team earn a Southern Lakes Conference split with state-ranked Burlington this week. Vance went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and a run scored in Thursdays’ 5-3 victory.
Katie Kealy, Janesville Craig softball—Kealy went the distance, and then some, for the Cougars this week. She pitched all 12 innings of Wednesday’s 4-3 victory over Madison La Follette, striking out seven and giving up just two earned runs. One day later, Kealy pitched all 10 innings of a 3-1 win, striking out six and allowing just one unearned run on five hits against Beloit.
Turner girls relays—The Trojans won the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays at the Bluejay Invite at Cambridge on Thursday, helping Turner capture the team title in the 11-team meet. Jayla Chancy, Marlee Young, Arlennis Segura and Destiny Wash teamed to win the 400 relay in 53.45 seconds. Chancy, Montana McMahon, Segura and Wash won the 800 in 1:53.39.
Maggy Henschler, Milton girls soccer—The senior carried over her scoring barrage from the ice rink to the soccer pitch. Henschler had five goals and three assists in two matches this week. She had one goal and two assists in a 4-1 win at DeForest on Tuesday. At home Thursday against Watertown, she had four goals and an assist in a 9-2 victory over Watertown.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Janesville Parker vs. Sun Prairie, baseball, 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday—Sun Prairie and Janesville Parker tangle in a pivotal early-season home-and-home series. Sun Prairie was ranked fourth in the WBCA preseason poll and is 1-1 in conference play. Parker started the conference season with a win over La Follette and hosts Sun Prairie on Tuesday.
Whitewater vs.Evansville, baseball, 4:45 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday—Two of the top Rock Valley Conference contenders meet in a home-and-home series, with the Blue Devils hosting Tuesday. Whitewater is unbeaten at 3-0, one-half game behind leader Jefferson.
Orfordville Parkview at Palmyra-Eagle, softball, Thursday—The two former Rock Valley teams meet for the first time in the Trailways South. Both teams have conference title aspirations, although the Vikings were no-hit by Johnson Creek in the conference opener.
Tri-City Invitational, boys golf, Friday and Saturday, at Glen Erin—Parker, Craig, Beloit and Fort Atkinson compete in the two-day, 36-hole event.
Milton at Fort Atkinson, girls soccer, 6 p.m., Thursday—These longtime rivals meet with the winner getting a leg up on an upper division finish.
Janesville Craig at Burlington, baseball doubleheader, 10 a.m.—Two of the top programs in southern Wisconsin square off in a doubleheader. Craig is ranked first in the state in Division 1, while Burlington comes in at No. 11.
