So much for a 50-degree Thursday in January.
The National Weather Service in Sullivan has issued a winter weather advisory promising freezing rain and plummeting temperatures Thursday, which is prompting area schools to close early and some businesses to cancel after-school care.
The National Weather Service predicts colder air will sweep across southern Wisconsin this afternoon, forcing temperatures to quickly drop below freezing.
At the same time, the area will be hit by a sloppy mix of precipitation, including freezing rain, sleet and snow. Deteriorating travel conditions are expected Thursday afternoon and evening.
School districts that are closing schools between 1 and 2 p.m. include Beloit Turner, Brodhead, Clinton, Evansville, Juda, Milton and Parkview, according to the WCLO website.
The Albany School District has canceled afternoon 4K and all after-school activities, as has the Delavan-Darien School District.
Oakhill Christian School and Rock Prairie Montessori will let students out at 1 p.m.
Also closing are the Parker YMCA preschool, Small Wonders Child Care in Milton (just at Milton East and Milton West Elementary, not the main site) and the YWCA in Janesville.
The Janesville School District has canceled all athletic events and practices, and local students won't be traveling for out-of-town games.
