Two debates are planned in the race for the Democratic nomination in the 1st Congressional District race to succeed Rep. Paul Ryan.
As of Wednesday, The Gazette had received no word of any debate planned ahead of the Republican primary. Both primaries are Aug. 14.
The debates between Democrats Randy Bryce and Cathy Myers are set for July 8 in Lake Geneva and July 25 at the Rock County 4-H Fair in Janesville. The public is invited to both. Details:
- July 8 at Badger High School, 220 E. South St., Lake Geneva. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and debate runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. with moderator Joy Cardin. Live radio coverage provided by NewsTalk 1510 AM Milwaukee/Waukesha. Sponsored by Democratic Party of Walworth County.
- July 25 at the Rock County 4-H Fairgrounds in Janesville, likely at one of the minor stages, 10 to 11 a.m. Audience members must pay fair admission. Sponsored and carried live by WCLO AM 1230 radio. Wisconsin Eye, a nonprofit cable TV network, also plans coverage.
On the Republican side, no talk of a debate has surfaced, although WCLO radio’s “Your Talk Show” is hoping to hold one.
A spokesman for presumed Republican front-runner Bryan Steil indicated no interest in debates when contacted by The Gazette on Wednesday.
Spokesman Andrew Iverson said Steil has appeared with some of the other GOP candidates at forums sponsored by Walworth and Kenosha county Republican parties and that Steil is concentrating on meeting residents one-on-one at events such as dairy breakfasts and parades.
