The Janesville Fire Department responded to a residential fire Thursday afternoon in central Janesville, according to a fire department news release.
A person passing in a vehicle noticed a fire at about 1:35 p.m. at 1430 E. Holmes St. and notified the fire department.
First responders found a small wood residence with flames at the back of the building upon arrival. Flames had spread from a mulch pile and small privacy fence and extended up the home’s exterior to its second floor, according to the release.
Brown smoke also was seen coming from the roof’s ridge vent, according to the release.
The flames were quickly extinguished. Damages were estimated at about $20,000.
The fire department is investigating the fire, according to the release.
