An overdose death in January led to the arrest of a Janesville man Thursday.
Jacob S. Carlson, 32, of 1736 Hancock Lane, Janesville, was arrested at 10:51 a.m. Thursday in the 500 block of South Franklin Street on a charge of first-degree reckless homicide. The charges are in connection with the heroin overdose death of a 40-year-old woman in January.
Carlson and the victim were friends. They were also both recovering addicts who had relapsed, said Sgt. Chad Pearson of the Janesville Police Department Street Crimes Unit.
They both moved into a home for people recovering from addictions before their relapse.
Carlson was cooperative with police and admitted that he had given her the drug. He could not be arrested immediately because police had to wait for autopsy reports to come back.
Carlson is in the Rock County Jail awaiting his first court appearance.
In 2016, 33 people in Rock County died from overdoses involving legal and illegal opioids such as heroin. Of those, 12 were in Janesville.
Janesville police have counted six opioid deaths so far this year, putting the city on a pace to match last year’s number.
