SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Janesville has been named one of America’s best hospitals for obstetrics and emergency care by Women’s Choice Award, a referral service.

The hospital’s family birth center ranks in the top 17 percent of 2,720 U.S. hospitals offering obstetrics, the sector of medicine concerning childbirth, according to a hospital news release.

The America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics Award was based on results from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey and hospital outcome scores along with research on women’s health care preferences, according to the release.

Criteria for the award include:

  • Percentage of patients reporting they would definitely recommend the hospital through the survey.
  • Patient safety ranking based on 11 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ measures of infection and complication rates.
  • Low rates of early elective deliveries, between 0 and 1 percent.
  • Baby-Friendly USA designation.

The Excellence in Emergency Care Award is based on measures of patient time spent in the emergency department, according to the release.

The award also considers average time before patients with chest pain or heart attack symptoms receive treatment and average wait time for pain medication for patients with broken bones, according to the release. Award-winning hospitals have average times in the highest 25th to 50th percentile in the country.

Women’s Choice Award is a referral source that helps women make health care choices, according to the release.

“We pride ourselves on delivering safe, compassionate and exceptional care each day, so we are truly honored that the women who have received services in our family birth suites and emergency department would recommend SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Janesville to women across the country,” hospital President Ben Layman said in the release.
