A Whitewater man was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison on child porn charges after he reached a plea agreement on the eve of his trial last month.

Michael B. Hoffer, 60, was also sentenced to 20 years of extended supervision after he pleaded guilty to four counts of possessing child porn, Walworth County District Attorney Zeke Wiedenfeld confirmed.

Both sides reached a plea agreement that included recommending the 20-year terms last month, but Hoffer was not officially sentenced until Thursday.

The other 12 child porn possession charges he faced were dismissed and read into the record, as was a single count of sexual exploitation of a child by filming.

Had he gone to trial and been convicted of the latter charge, Hoffer would have faced a mandatory life in prison as a persistent repeater. He was convicted in 2000 of having sexual contact with a person younger than 16.

A woman met with Delavan police on June 4, 2017, and said Hoffer’s phone had inappropriate pictures of a young child on them, according to the criminal complaint. Police found 31 pictures and one four-second video of a young child on the phone.
