The Super Flower Blood Moon lunar eclipse appears beside the steeple of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in downtown Janesville late Sunday evening, May. 15. The total lunar eclipse happened as May's full moon, known as the Flower Moon, was near its closest point to Earth for the month, making it a supermoon. During a full lunar eclipse, the moon passes through the darkest part of the Earth's shadow -- the umbra. When the moon is within the umbra it gets a reddish hue because blue and green light are more easily scattered by dust particles in the atmosphere and orange and red colors remain more visible, sometimes called blood moons because of this phenomenon.
