The sun sets as fairgoers explore the dairy barn Aug. 29 at the Walworth County Fair in Elkhorn. When I arrived at the fair, I was desperate to take advantage of the beautiful sunset. I found my spot inside a barn and luckily a couple of people walked through to add the perfect finish to the composition.
Melissa Kerry, a member of the KANDU Industries dragon boat racing team, is greeted by high-fives from the team's competitors after the boat race Saturday, September 14, 2019, at Traxler Park in Janesville. I was so glad to capture this moment of grace and sportsmanship by the team competing against the KANDU team. Melissa's joyful expression makes the photo.
The top row of bricks falls in front of the former GM plant facade May 31 in Janesville. While I was waiting to take this shot, I got to speak to a stream of spectators that stopped by throughout the day to say their final goodbyes to the front facade of the former GM plant. It was powerful to document a significant part of Janesville’s history.
A pelican spreads its wings as it takes off above the Rock River on April 22, near the boat launch at the intersection of River Street and Rockport Road in Janesville. I was excited to capture this pelican so clearly in mid-flight. The pelicans captured the attention of Janesville residents during their unexpected visit, and they were a joy to photograph.
Jimmy Wilson holds his wife, Kelly, as the two sit on the couch watching television Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at their home in Janesville. Some said Jimmy Wilson, who has Down syndrome, should not get married, but the couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year. I love how casual but beautifully affectionate these two appear in the photograph. I was thankful to have this glimpse into their lives.
Parker’s Ryann Porter participates in the triple jump Thursday, May 23, during the WIAA Division 1 track and field sectional meet at Badger High School in Lake Geneva. The timing of this photo allowed me to capture her hair flying right after she landed in the sand. The sunlight and bright green leaves give this track photo some life.
Craig pitcher Gavin Kilen (12), center, reaches to catch a ball thrown by teammate Connor Clark (14), left, as Parker's Peyton Meyer (5), right, runs toward first base Monday, April 15, 2019, at Riverside Park in Janesville. Meyer was safe at first base. It can be a challenge to capture three baseball players in the same frame. I like that the entire play can be seen in this one photo.
Milton’s Jerry Jones (24) reacts after the Red Hawks’ victory against La Crosse Central in a WIAA Division 2 first-round football playoff game Friday, Oct. 25, at Milton High School. The expression on this player’s face says it all.
UW-Whitewater quarterback Max Meylor (7) jumps over UW-Stout’s Cannon Griner (18) before scoring a touchdown Nov. 9 at UW-Whitewater. This photograph is a sum of all its parts. The band’s purple uniforms in the background, the defender appearing to hover horizontally, the bit of light shining on the football and the quarterback’s jump caught at peak action make this one of my favorites.
Parker’s Tremar Curry reacts after finishing first in the 800-meter relay Friday, April 26, 2019, at Monterey Stadium in Janesville. Anyone who takes photos in Monterey Stadium knows there is a period of time where the sun is shining perfectly on the track at sunset. I was happy this reaction happened during that time.
