R-E-S-P-E-C-T

By FRANK SCHULTZ ( Contact )   Monday, July 2, 2012 - 12:06 p.m.

Somebody sent me an email that began with this interesting phrase:

“Frank, although I have little to no respect for you as a reporter, I would like for you to …”

The note was not signed. It went on to request that I look into an accusation that some public officials were vacationing on the public dime.

When I get such messages, and they are fairly rare, I try to keep my cool and respond to the request as professionally as possible. I tried to respond to this person, but my emails came back as undeliverable.

This person, and anyone else who wants to communicate with a news reporter, might want to consider how motivated the reporter might be after reading something like that.

I am looking into the allegation. I suspect it’s based on partial and inaccurate information.

Sigma40, I have taken your advice in respect to your comment. In my business, we can't afford to dwell on unconstructive/destructive criticism.

Frank, As Rick Nelson said once, you can't please everyone, gotta please yourself. You seem like a good person to me. Ask somebody who is close to you to give you a nice hug and you will feel better.

Sigma: Eleven is a nice age for girls. I would not call my grand daughter dumb at all. Lots of fun to be with.

Ive gotten emails from people on here telling me where to go and how they dislike me. I laugh and before I can even close out that message box ive already forgotten about it. Making a blog on here about someone who upset you, or trying to respond to them only shows that your mentality rivals that of a 11 yr old girl. Dont dumb yourself down and dwell on it... move on. geez.

gary....., I agree. City workers in Janesville work hard, and are unfair targets for malcontents.

Places like Chicago are where such complaints are valid.

I don't recall ever claiming to be a psychologist, but, you are correct.
I am speaking from personal experience
in dealing with malicious complaints and gossip
directed toward a small group of public employees
working under my direction.

I understand how you want to be 'professional'; good for you on that score--professionalism is becoming a lost art. HOWEVER, I wonder if, in the long run, society itself is harmed when we acknowledge that type of communication. In short, do we enable continued incivility by responding when people act inappropriately?

Long ago I have learned that
1.) If it doesn't have a confirmable signature, I wouldn't waste my time investigating. Also, this type of correspondence doesn't derserve a reply.
2.) Everyone has an opinion. The only opinions that matter to me are those of my wife, kids, family, employer, and those who know who I am. I would hope others would see what I do, how I do it, and why I do it...but in the end, I value the opinions of those who have respect and matter. An unsigned coreespondence, in my opinion, doesn't matter.
**Special Note** I use my real name on every blog and every letter, email, or phone call I make. Those who don't, as I said, doesn't matter

Frank....Your experience goes along with what John Eyster blogged. Although there is nothing wrong with free expression, there is a great deal wrong with not wanting the person on the receiving end to know who is doing the expressing....especially when it is as harsh as the letter you describe.

I would agree with your approach sir. The only caveat I would have, is to ask the Gazette editorial staff state their opinions are not influenced by their employer. No problemo for me, and it won't influence most people who comment. Just I would point out most the area is divided despite how we seem to vote.

The spineless jerk does not deserve the dignity of any sort of response, in my opinion, Frank.

And even after the public employees agreed to pay their fair share, it was not enough for some. They wanted their first born child too.

sounds like garyprimer is talking about himself if you change a couple of words here and there. People don't have anything against Public workers, they just believe as the President has said, they should pay their "Fair Share". Have a nice day.

Frank reply with this:

This is a follow up to my reply to your request. Disregard that reply.

Just think of it as a story draft for a "Mister Boffo" strip, Frank.

There is a small group of people,
delusional, jealous, and bitter,
that desperately wants to believe that public
workers are overpaid and under performing.
These people will never be satisfied and have devoted their lives to making other people as miserable as are they.
Public workers are an easy target because the misanthropes imagine themselves to be their bosses.
This gives them the illusion of sitting in a position of power, something that they desire, but that is lacking in their lives because of their inability to prudently manage power over others.
Give them the bum's rush.
That is more than they deserve.

I learned in 8th grade English at Marshall that, even though you are sending a negative letter, you should always start with something nice. The person who wrote to you wasn't even sending you a negative letter, but a request?
Interesting...

Dear numbskull,

Due to the economy, reporters are only investigating stories assigned by their editors and stories which readers pay to have investigated. Please remand an initial retainer of $50.00 (cash, certified check or money order) to:
FS Retirement Slush Fund
c/o Janesville Gazette
1 S. Parker Drive
Janesville, WI 53545

Due to the volume of investigations I conduct, no refunds are available.

"Respectfully",

I would be tempted to start my reply with, "Although I think you're a complete jerk, I followed up on your request..."

Tempting, but I wouldn't actually do it.
