YES to a PRIMARY on RECALL ELECTION!
YES to a PRIMARY on RECALL ELECTION!
I agree with our State Senator Tim Cullen that there ought to be a PRIMARY to select the DEM candidate to run against Governor Walker in the RECALL ELECTION this year. Do YOU?
Today the RECALL PETITIONS will be delivered to the GAB. I assume that there will be more than enough valid signatures on those RECALL PETITIONS to trigger a RECALL ELECTION for the office of Governor later this year. With that assumption, I agree with our State Senator Tim Cullen (D – 15th State Senate District) that it is IMPORTANT to have a PRIMARY to select the DEM candidate to run against Governor Walker.
After all, WE THE PEOPLE of WI are THE home of the PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT led by Robert M. “Fighting Bob” LaFollette and gave birth to the DIRECT OPEN PRIMARY.
For more information about primary elections, read Wikipedia’s “Primary election” article. And, for further information about Robert LaFollette PROGRESSIVE leadership, read Wikipedia’s “Robert M. LaFollette, Sr.” article.
WE THE PEOPLE of WI choose the candidates for elective offices NOT the political parties! I hope the leadership of both political parties in WI are attuned to the fact that WE THE PEOPLE of WI expect to make the choice of the candidates for elective office!! Do they?
I hope they remember that FACT that WE THE PEOPLE of WI spoke clearly in 1978 when the REPUBLICAN PARTY of WI recommended US Senator Bob Kasten to be the GOP candidate to run for WI Governor, but WE THE PEOPLE of WI, through our DIRECT OPEN PRIMARY nominated LEE DREYFUS to be the REPUBLICAN candidate for Governor and then WE THE PEOPLE of WI proceeded to ELECT LEE DREYFUS to be WI GOVERNOR!
Forewarned is forearmed! This time, I hope, the DEMOCRAT PARTY of WI will pay attention to the EXPECTATION of WE THE PEOPLE of WI to choose the candidate to run against Gov. Walker in the RECALL ELECTION this year. What do YOU think?
I read Scott Bauer’s informative Associated Press article in various newspapers this morning, including the Janesville Gazette (starts on page 1 – I am NOT allowed to give you a link to the Gazette online), so, you can use the AP link to the article, “Walker opponents to submit recall petitions.”
VERY INTERESTING to note the different headlines various newspapers have put on this AP article. For example, the Janesville Gazette’s headline is, “Who would walker face? State Dems searching for strong opponent.”
YOU will gain helpful information and perspective by reading Scott Bauer’s AP article.
A key point in the article is that there is no reason for the DEMS to move to identify a DEM candidate until the GAB declares the legitimacy of the RECALL SIGNATURES and triggers the process to set the date for the RECALL ELECTION.
Once that LEGAL STEP is in place, then it is appropriate for the DEMS to identify candidates. The anticipation is that several persons will step forward to run against Governor Walker in the RECALL ELECTION.
For me, a KEY issue is HOW the DEM candidate is CHOSEN! I believe it is VERY, VERY IMPORTANT that the DEMS use our WI DIRECT OPEN PRIMARY for that choice! What do YOU think?
Bauer’s article cites the intention of our State Senator Tim Cullen to run, “Moderate Democrat state Sen. Tim Cullen has said he intends to take on Walker but has not made a formal announcement or been actively campaigning. He said he expects and welcomes a Democratic primary, which likely would be held in May, although the timing will be unclear until possible delays related to the signature verification process and any legal challenges are resolved.”
When the Gazette reported Senator Cullen’s intent back in December, 2011, I commented in my WE THE PEOPLE blog, “GOVERNOR – GO FOR IT, TIM! What about a bi-partisan TICKET with Dale Schultz?”
Unfortunately, I learned that an AMENDMENT to our WI Constitution in 1967 blocked separate election of Governor and Lieutenant Governor, so it is IMPOSSIBLE to have a BI-PARTISAN situation with our Governor and Lieutenant Governor. DISappointing to me! What do YOU think?
Bauer’s quotes our State Senator Cullen stating, “If there’s not a primary, then who’s actually deciding this?” ONLY the WI DIRECT OPEN PRIMARY is the appropriate way for the DEMS to identify the candidate who will run against Governor Walker in the RECALL ELECTION! What do YOU think?
So, THE COUNT BEGINS TODAY… time will tell…
Here we go…

I just don't see it.
You basically need about 3% of the Walker supports to FLIP, and vote for the Democrat. Because the way I see it, the hype will be so huge on this recall election, that basically ALL the people who voted in the 1st election (Walker v Barret) will show up again. Walker has made his detractors more and more angry; but I don't see many crossovers. Those who voted Walker, switching over to vote against him. So it may not be "with ease", but I think he'll win by about the same margin he beat Barrett by. If he runs against Fauk, the margin would be much larger, IMO.

I disagree that any Democrat running will be "defeated with ease," perhaps the Dems waited to announce a serious candidate only to force Walker to defend his position, and not provide him with opposition to rip apart during the collecting of signatures?

I really don't think the Democrats have any candidate who can win.
Who are the current front runners? Kathleen Fauk who has been beat like a drum in every election she has thrown herself into? The only person I think would have any serious credibility would be Russ Feingold, and I don't know if he is even interested? All others are total shills, rehashed failures, and or nobody's, who will be defeated with ease.

""So let me get this straight. The recall petitions were signed by people that basically said 'anyone but Walker'.
This kind of blind allegiance has historically led to bad outcomes.""
Kind of like the anyone but Obama movement? Or does that not count among Republicans? The recall movement is starting as a referendum on Walker. Results: NOT GOOD! Now , its time to run a candidate and it will be even worse for him, because the money that the dems/unions spend will call him on his pathetic record and he is going to get rolled in this election. Cutting education, Medicaid(Badgercare), cronyism(raises for friends in government), Job losses every month since his budget passed.
The rhetoric of.."the reforms are working" just isn't going to work outside Waukesha,Ozaukee, and Washington counties. I read the Governors statement from NY today and listened to him on Rush and he knows hes in BIG trouble!! Good luck on campaigning THIS time on what you are ACTUALLY going to do!

Could someone please tell me what that ^ ^ sentence means? I’ve read it five times and I have no idea what that means….Is that even coherent? This by a Professor and teacher?
“I hope they remember that FACT that WE THE PEOPLE of WI spoke clearly in 1978 when the REPUBLICAN PARTY of WI recommended US Senator Bob Kasten to be the GOP candidate to run for WI Governor…” The key word being “recommended” here John. There was no coronation as you imply.
And if your party does choose to have a primary, I would lead a REPUBLICAN REVOLT AND SEND OUR PARTY TO THE POLLS to choose who WE want Scott to run against…John.
We will play your little recall game all the way to the voting booth…John...twice if necessary… to ensure your choice loses so badly you will be smarting for decades. Scott Walker has done nothing wrong to be recalled. Not one law has been broken. You just can’t handle losing, and that’s all THE PEOPLE need to know.

Senator Cullen stopped by my house and ask for my vote to be my Senator a year and a half ago. I expect the senator to full fill his oath of office. If he wanted to be governor, he was in the wrong race in 2010.

For me, a KEY issue is if there is to be a Democratic Primary Election first, then certainly there is enough time to use the recently updated voting districts in the gubernatorual election. Does the definition of a "moderate Democrat" include leaving the state and shirking one's duty for weeks? Having it both ways?

johnnyreb, many people are uncomfortable signing a public document that may be considered an indication of their political persuasion. It's a point, nonetheless, of no standing. There will be enough signatures to force a recall.

wislady, I misread your question. No. Walker has ten days to decide whether to not face the recall. The Constitution says if he does not withdraw within ten days he is the presumed candidate of his party. So, no, he can not face a challenger in a primary. The only way there could be a Republican primary is if Walker chooses to not stand for recall. Article XIII, Section 12.

As you know, wislady, the Republican scoundrels have pulled this trick in other elections. And yes, the Republicans could put up a candidate on the Democrat side to force a primary and delay the recall. They've already openly discussed this. Surprised that you weren't privy to such conversations.

"5 MILLION people live in Wisconsin and a vast MAJORITY has chosen NOT to sign the recall petition."- kaysbrew @ 8:46 am.
This is of course a meaningless statement, it is misleading and patently untrue. This is the case with most of the rhetoric that Walker the dropout vomits. Of the 5 million, of course many are less than voting age, they would not be able to sign the petition anyways. There are others who did not vote in the election, they are apathetic and would not sign the petition, nor will they vote.
Statements like this from Walker and crew are designed to appeal to the simple minded. What is important is that ENOUGH people signed the petition. There were enough and there will be a recall election reguardless of what cute little untruths Walker vomits out for his fan base.

Isn't it a beautiful and wonderful Winter day, John? Article XIII, Section 12 of our state Constitution is the controlling document regarding what happens if more than one person from any party chooses to run in a recall and it specifies a primary in that event. Thanks to all of the courageous and patriotic petition circulators and petition signers, including the thousands upon thousands of former Walker supporters. This is what democracy looks like!

Yes John, today the VERY UNCHRISTIAN act of recall will be presented in an EVIL UPRISING to the GAB. Many undereducated people will be celebrating thinking that they have defeated a foe (such as the devil did when he thought he had won over Jesus), but the battle is not over. Evil cannot prevail unless good men do nothing. Good men will go out and support the Christian-American values that Walker has supported since his election. Yes John this is a battle of good and evil and you have chosen evil as your partner. I pray for your soul, but it will not be my decision on what happens to you in the end, it will be yours.

It doesn't matter, the unions are going to select the candidate which is exactly why they told Barrett to stay out, mostly because he adopted Walkers plan for the city if Milwaukee despite railing against it last year.I agree with the unions Barrett has no credibility but he at least had the smarts to realize he had to do something to get the spending in his city under control, I understand why public unions hate that.
