"I can name that scandal in one word" - Can YOU?
“I can name that scandal in one word" - Can YOU? "I can name that scandal in one word,” is the title of the Wisconsin State Journal’s metro columnist, Chris Rickert, which I read online this morning. I hope you are as curious as I was when I saw the title on Chris’ OpEd column today, “I can name that scandal in one word.” What is the ONE WORD? YOUR guess? NOW – before you read the column – what is YOUR guess?
I pay close attention to Chris’ columns as I read the Wisconsin State Journal online every morning 7/7. Chris generously made time last June to talk with the AP US Government & Politics teachers participating in the seminar which Dr. David Canon, Political Science, UW-Madison and I co-teach for the School of Education’s Advanced Placement Summer Institute. We were teaching our 15th summer institute together last June and NOW we are preparing for June 2012.
In order to plug-in our government teachers with WI state government during the seminar, I arrange for a guest to share conversation over lunch 3 of the 5 days of the week. We ENJOY lunch on the MEMORIAL UNION TERRACE as weather permits. Guests last June included, Senator Cullen – legislator, Stan Milam and Chris Rickert, media/press. Over the years, the teachers have had valuable conversations with representatives/lobbyists of special interest groups, members of the State Assembly, appointees of the Governor, et al.
I am NOW looking forward with anticipation to another satisfying and fulfilling seminar for Advanced Placement United States Government & Politics teachers at UW-Madison coming June, 2012. You can use this link to get information, “Advanced Placement Summer Institute,” School of Education, UW-Madison – June 2012.
The Wisconsin State Journal identifies Chris Rickert as its “metro columnist.” They state, “…where he's got his laser-like perspective trained (mostly) on all things Madison. He is especially engaged by blatant hypocrisy, hot partisan rhetoric, class warfare and ice cream.”
Chris does have a wide-ranging portfolio choosing to write about anything and everything. Some days I agree with his column and some days I DISagree. That’s one of the reasons I read Chris’ columns religiously whenever they are posted – so far as I am able to ascertain, there is no specific schedule for the column to be published.
I hope you are as curious as I was when I saw the title on Chris’ OpEd column online this morning, “I can name that scandal in one word.”
I read the column continuing to guess at that “one word.” What is YOUR guess? NOW – before you read the column – what is YOUR guess?
Chris starts off writing, “The drip, drip, drip of Milwaukee County's investigation into Gov. Scott Walker's old office turned into a stream last week as two of the former county exec's appointees were booked on an embezzlement rap and another man on sex crime allegations.”
He then asserts, “This baby needs a name.”
He clarifies his perspective arguing, “I say this not just because something short and catchy will provide journalists with a serviceable descriptive replacement for what UW-Madison political science professor Barry Burden said is fast becoming ‘a complicated web of activities involving charities, sex abuse, pro-Walker websites and travel.’
“But also because without one, its complexity and duration threaten to outstrip the grasp of our short attention spans, leaving the guilty with a better shot at spinning the facts to their favor and avoiding political consequences.
“So I put out a call last week for nominations, and let me tell you, we've got some work to do.”
NOW I am going to leave it to YOU to use this link to Chris’ column to find out the ONE WORD he reports to have been the MOST POPULAR response to his call for nominations, “I can name that scandal in one word.” What do YOU guess? WHY? HOPE to read your comment!
Alert, Chris argues that the most popular ONE WORD is INSUFFICIENT. He is still seeking the optimal ONE WORD… so, what is YOUR nomination?
I think you too will chuckle reading Chris’ personal testimony, “Being an Illinois boy, I like the hyphenated three-worders — the ‘licenses-for-bribes’ era of former Illinois Gov. George Ryan, the ‘pay-to-play’ tragicomedy of his successor, Rod Blagojevich.”
Chris concludes his column suggesting that the only descriptor may be coming later in 2012. What do YOU think that descriptor is?
I leave it to YOU to check it out. Please, readers, do NOT post a comment which gives away this mystery close of the column.
Watching with MUCH interest for your comments today…
Here we go…

Yes, free speech is a blogger's right, until that is taken away from us. IMO, the governor is working very hard to take those rights away, and more, away from all of us. That means the rights of the Republicans too. He's not leaving anybody out.

And here we have United States Marines urinating on dead Taliban foot soldiers in a video posted a few days ago. But, this is nothing like Abu Grab. This has nothing to do with our President. Where’s the outrage here John? Where’s the call for the Secretary of Defense’s resignation and all the hearings of “What did they know and when did they know it?” My gosh John you are so transparent. You make me ill.

Many on the left are in denial over this issue. They "feel" anything about walker is bad so they grasp at everything to rationalize their derangement. This issue is just the latest of many.

While the initial story is interesting, I was more interested in the "guests" invited to the "Advanced Placement Summer Institute!" With Cullen,Milam, and Rickert(couln't they find a moderate or conservative,or didn' they even try?) they should have called the course,
Eyster and Canon Indoctrinate UW Studens." What a complete waste of my tax money given to the UW system!

I'm amused how people continue to bring up that Walker requested the investigation. If anyone thinks requesting an investigation into something about to be made public that your administration is responsible for somehow absolves you of culpability or suggests you are above reproach, I have a bridge to sell you. Reminds me of the textbook defense attorney response to every indictment that their defendant is eagerly looking forward to their day in court to vigorously defend themselves and prove their innocence. Why, of course they are. And the day of trial, they accept a plea deal and end up in prison.
I think a much more honest approach is to state that the money allegedly went missing during Walker's administration, on Walker's watch and was stolen by people in the Walker administration. The investigation continues and we have no idea who may end up being caught in the snare of justice. garyprimer, I like the name you've suggested for the alleged crime but I think we better make it WalkerGate I to avoid confusion with WalkerGate II, WalkerGate III, et al.

An error of omission occurs in Rickert's article. Can you guess what it is?
Even a recent Associated Press story pointed it out, though about umpteen paragraphs into their report.
The original "drip, drip, drip of Milwaukee County's investigation" was initiated by-------hold on---------
Scott Walker.
Now the lefties are going to try to hang the whole thing on Walker. While this is just an INVESTIGATION the usual suspects that post at Gazettextra will proclaim Scott Walker guilty of all the charges. (They already have ie; CP and 'rodent')

Imagine that neither John's piece or the story he links to provides the real details behind the reason for the investigation in the first place...guess real facts are not what you want to discuss.
