Today is the 71st anniversary of the JAPANESE attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii... 9 hours later, the JAPANESE attacked The Philippines where US troops, including The Janesville 99, were on duty! Remember and be thankful for ALL who served and SERVE NOW!

The front page of the Janesville Gazette YESTERDAY dramatically reminded us that today would be the 71st anniversary of the attack of Japan on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Note the big headline with large picture of Ken Sweet, “Return to Pearl.” The article reprinted from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports on a very meaningful documentary which recounts the reports of state Pearl Harbor veterans. The public premier of the documentary was held last Wednesday (12/5) evening at Discovery World in Milwaukee. The documentary is being shown on PUBLIC TV in Milwaukee.

Throughout the media today, we have ALL been reminded of the same note which the New York Times featured in its daily feature, “ON THIS DAY” – “On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese warplanes attacked the home base of the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, drawing the United States into World War II. More than 2,300 Americans were killed.”

Today we are REMEMBERING and HONORING those who were serving at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. As Abraham Lincoln asserted at Gettysburg, “It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.”

At the same time, I think it is meaningful to remind all of us in the Janesville area of the VERY SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE of the fact that 9-hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, JAPAN bombed US troops on duty in the Philippines.

REMEMBER: The PHILIPPINES, which the US had captured in the Spanish-American War and the subsequent, very unfortunate and costly, “Philippine-American War.” The US kept control of the Philippines as the Schurman Commission recommended as of August 14, 1899. So, US forces were in the Philippines to PROTECT US TERRITORY in December 1941.

You may want to read details of the FISASCO at McArthur’s headquarters in Manila after the attack on Pearl Harbor, if so, use this link to, “The Japanese Attack Finds General MacArthur Unprepared” from The Pacific War. Remember: Our JANESVILLE men were there in the Philippines with General MacArthur!

If you want to review some of the reports on our “JANESVILLE 99,” I suggest you check my blog posted April 17, 2012 citing ANNA MARIE LUX’s meaningful “Between the Lines” column. Here is the link to the blog posting, “'Remembering Bataan' – Thanks Anna Marie Lux!”

That blog post includes citation of and a link to more information about our Janesville 99, “Proviso East High School Bataan Commemorative Research Project” includes the 192nd Tank battalion in which the Janesville National Guard Unit served. There is a FULL roster of the battalion – use this link to that roster, “192nd GHQ Light Tank Battalion” – Alphabetical roster.

As we give attention to this tragic anniversary – a date that will live in INFAMY – remember that it is ALSO the anniversary of the attack on The Philippines where our JANESVILLE 99 were on duty!

Here we go…

Mr. E.
