Seeking fair stories

By ANN MARIE AMES ( Contact )   Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 3:14 p.m.

I just had the first of what will be a million planning meetings as we get ready to cover the Rock County 4-H Fair and Walworth County Fair.

I know! Crazy, isn’t it? The fair is like, weeks away! And here I am getting ready already. When I was in 4-H, I wouldn’t have been ready for the fair until it was over.

But, now that I’m all grown up, I have to meet deadlines and stuff.

To that end, I’d like to ask for suggestions of fair stories. What will be special about the fair this year? What family’s story stands out?

Even more important at this point … Who will be working on fair projects over the next few weeks? I’d love to spend a couple hours in the kitchen, the craft room or the workshop as you get your award-winning project finished up.

Send me your ideas, please.

Now, stop poking around on the Internet and get back to walking that calf.

Everyone has heard of the Tour de France but did you know that on the Saturday evening before the fair, there is the Tour de 4-H! The riders either go 20,24 or 30 miles depending on age. It starts at the boat dock at Lions beach and travels thru the back roads of south east Rock County

Fair projects are well under way in this house. The kiddo has signed up for 37 and has only 10 left to complete. A couple may not get finished but that is ok...she needs to be able to enjoy the summer and not spend all her time inside doing 4H stuff :D

As for fair stories I know the emu will be back in the poultry barn and the incubator with baby chicks barn will be back. I also know that the 4-H ambassadors are planing lots of fun activities for the 4-H awareness center tent.
*
Rocket launch is at the Thresheree on July 16th at 7:30-10:30am and the small engine judging is at 1pm same place Threshermans park.
*
These are just a few of the events that are going on now...4H is much more than just going to the fair. There also is the upcoming softball tournaments, the barn set ups, working on and completing fair projects (everything from woodworking, floral, sewing, computers, leather work, ceramics etc...) working daily with your animals feeding, cleaning and training them. What these kids put into all that they do just to show at the fair takes hours & hours of work and dedication. The fair is just a end result to their hard work.

Rock county is lucky to have such a great bunch of youth. I am proud of each & everyone of them and wish them all good luck.
