Strawberry season is not forever
I just got off the phone with Joe Skelly of Skelly's Farm Market. This weekend and next week will be primo strawberry picking, and he was sharing some tips.
In yet another very serious moment in journalism, I asked Joe what is his favorite way to eat strawberries.
He didn't miss a beat.
"Shortcake. But it's got to be the kind made with Bisquick. Not the angel food cake kind."
That made me laugh and sent me back to Grandma's kitchen for a moment where dinner this time of year would certainly have included homegrown berries with shortcake. The Bisquick kind.
Watch for berry-picking tips in Saturday's Gazette.
Do you pick your own, or buy them already picked?

I'm sorry, it was not a contest.

I'd like a county-by-county strawberry shortcake luncheon. If they can do dairy breakfasts and pork chop dinners, they can do strawberry shortcake luncheons - but they better offer the Bisquick kind. Spongecake or Angel-food cake don't do full justice to the strawberries.

"Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about.
Strawberry Fields forever."
Was this a contest,
do I win a prize,
was it coincidental,
or was it subconscious?
