Poof! Suddenly it's a fair

By ANN MARIE AMES ( Contact )   Tuesday, July 26, 2011 - 1:35 p.m.

I spent several hours on the Rock County 4-H Fairgrounds on Monday with photographer Dan Lassiter. It was pretty quiet. A handful of kids carried projects into the Craig Center for some early judging.

Here and there, families shook bedding into the dairy barn or put barrows into newly painted pens.

This morning as I pulled up to the grounds, it was as if someone flipped a switch.

Every inch of space above the pig pens is filled with 4-H'ers catching up with their friends. The wash racks are full of dairy heifers that got dirty in trailers on the way in.

Lots of people are enjoying lemonades and corn dogs.

Here's one little thing that made me laugh. I am pretty sure this is the same sign that hung in the dairy barn about a million years ago when I was a Lima 4-H'er.

I'll be here all week looking for stories. Be sure to say, "Hi."

I agree with Leia3. There are so many great projects that the kids have entered that are not animal related - clothing, woodworking, flower arranging, arts & crafts, baking and food preservation, child development, and many more. I would like to see more coverage on these areas as well. These kids deserve the recognition for their great work too.

I would like to see more coverage given to kids that are in some of the other 4-h projects as well. Look at some of the unique and cool items kids have made and hear their story. I do enjoy the animal coverage as well just maybe more of the other projects too.

Support the kids and their animals. Go to the fair.

How about getting out of the barns and checking out the buildings in the south west corner of the fair. By concentrating on just the barns, you are ignoring over half of the kids in 4-H. There are some pretty amazing entries in the Craig Center, the Block Building, and the Blackhawk Building. Go check them out!

Just a suggestion....I'd like to encourage you to think outside the box a bit this year in the livestock coverage. There is always so much attention drawn to the Grand Champion market lamb, steer and hog...as there should be. But, it is frustrating that every year the Grand champions in the breeding stock shows are not covered. Often these are the youth that are actually raising these animals 12 months a year. The Supreme champion heifer or the the Supreme champion ewe or ram overall all breeds is just as big an accomplishment. Maybe some coverage of showmanship winners or the Master Showman contest, or sheep lead class. There are more than 3 winners in the beef, sheep and swine shows...lets hear about them too.
