A fair question

By ANN MARIE AMES ( Contact )   Wednesday, July 6, 2011 - 11:19 a.m.

This morning the Gazette newsroom will assemble to plan our county fair coverage. Feel free to send me ideas for feature stories.

Maybe you know a kid or a family that deserves some special recognition this year? Or, maybe there's something you've always wondered about the fair but have been too scared to ask. Fire away!

We've got at least two fairs to cover, so don't hold back.

Speaking of fairs, the Jefferson County Fair is underway. I've been following ag advocate Carrie Mess (@DairyCarrie) on Twitter. Her posts about weighing steers and packing lunches for the barns made me a little nostalgic for my 4-H youth.

I don't know Carrie, but I made a friendly comment to her about keeping the kids and calves hydrated. She replied that they've been adding peach Jell-O to the steer's water for weeks to keep him from noticing the transition to city water. Brilliant!

Speaking of Twitter, it's sounding a lot like I'll be camped out at the fair with a laptop this summer. It think our coverage will be pretty thorough.

It would be fun if somebody would let me sit on their show box and write stories. I could sit in the dairy barn on a day the beef kids are showing or something. I don't want to get in the way.

On a final note, I dreamed about picking zucchini last night. I am going to assume that a dream translator would say the zucchini stands for something other than zucchini. What do you think? Am I going crazy?

Fair judging has already started and will be steady from before now until fair week. Horse was last week, this Saturday is Rocketry and Small engines. Next week Thursday is the Family clothing style revue and Friday brings Visual Arts and Photography. For a full schedule of judging go to rockcounty4hfair.com and click on About Us then Fair Premium Book. The first page shows all the judging dates.
While 4H is typically thought of to be farm kids showing their big animals, the biggest projects in Rock County are Photography, Visual Arts, Foods, Drawing and Painting, Cloverbuds (grade K-2). Swine is the biggest animal project coming in at 6th place and Rabbits in 7th. Rounding out the top 10 are Home environment, Archery, and Poultry.

While animals are a big component of the fair, there are plenty of other projects to look at too. Come over to the Craig, Block, or Blackhawk buildings and take a look around!

The month of July should be filled with monthly meetings for projects including club monthly meetings. I would think to get a wide area of projects talked about you could attend a meeting and talk to the entire club about getting ready for the fair. The age ranges from 9 years to 18 years. You can't beat that.

I have often wondered who has been actively involved in the Rock County Fair and 4-H the longest. I mean been a member since childhood and continues to actively be involved as a leader/superintent ect., to this day. The late Alma Maske comes to mind as such a person. She was well into her 80's when I was in 4-H in the late 70's and 80's and was still activily involved in the Home furnings area.

Wonder who is that such of a person today????

Thursday is the judging for the poultry dept. We would love to have you sit around and see the organized chaos LOL. We start at 8:30am with showmanship then on to judging all the geese & turkeys to chickens, ducks and pigeons. It is not a glamorous animal project, and we don't bring in record prices at the auction but the kids sure have fun.
