Grants available for agricultural literacy
Here's a press release from Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom:
The Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom is accepting applications for teacher mini-grants and matching grants for groups that sponsor efforts to promote agricultural literacy in K-12 schools.
The Ag in the Classroom will award up to $500 to groups sponsoring programs or projects that promote agricultural literacy. A total of $4,000 will be awarded.
Projects considered for grants must be targeted to grades K-12 and should enhance student knowledge of the contribution made by agriculture. Projects that use funds toward an ongoing, sustainable education effort will receive preference over those that involve a “one-time” program.
The application deadline for this grant is April 1, 2010. Call Darlene Arneson at 608-828-5719.
Ag in the Classroom is a program to help students K-12 to understand the importance of agriculture.
The program is coordinated by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with funding from the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Foundation, other agricultural groups, and a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection. Grants also are available to teachers who work ag into their curriculums
The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation is offering grants up to $100 each to pre-school through high school teachers, in a public or private school system, to fund projects that promote agricultural literacy in the classroom.
Grants can be used for innovative lessons, activities, projects, resources, presentations, school fairs and other projects. Projects should focus on integrating agriculture into a variety of curriculum areas.
Priority will be given to applicants for resources that will last more than one school year as opposed to funds for field trips, consumables and “one-time” use. A total of $1,000 will be distributed in 2010 with this program.
A judging committee will review all funding requests that are properly completed and postmarked by the January 15, 2010 deadline.
For more information, contact Darlene Arneson at 608-828-5719, or get an application on the Agriculture in the Classroom web site at www.wisagclassroom.org.

Lets make it a loan. Looks like we over funded the Department of Agriculture. All I ask is no tax increases while the give away continues during a recession. Now if WI had a rainy day fund like Texas, things would be different.
