An outlet for creative writing
I joined the Wisconsin Writers Association about eight years ago. Now, Iím on the board of directors. I also spent a little time last weekend submitting electronically three entries into the WWAís fall Jade Ring contests. I have a goal of someday winning a Jade Ring. I came close once already, finishing second with an essay I wrote about my last visit with an uncle who had dementia. I also took honorable mention for an essay I wrote after observing the sentencing in a triple homicide in Janesville.
Last weekend, I submitted another essay and a story in the Memoir/Reminiscence category. Though I donít consider myself much of a poet, I also took a shot at submitting a free-verse poem.
First place in any category wins $100 or a Jade Ring (you can only get one Jade Ring). Entering a piece in any contest costs just $10. For an extra $5, you can get feedback from the judge. To enter these contests, you must be a WWA member. Membership costs $35 per year ($20 for students). Awards will go out during our fall conference Sept. 27-29 in Wisconsin Rapids.
Iím a WWA member for many more reasons than just the chance to enter contests. Iíve learned much about writing by attending the spring and fall conferences. Even more important than that, Iíve developed a network of talented fellow writers. We discuss writing, and they share feedback on my stories. Some of these folks I consider good friends.
It sounds like this extended Memorial Day weekend will be wet and cool. Maybe you have plans to enjoy family or salute our veterans at a local ceremony. If you have idle time to sit indoors and have creative writing pieces in your computer, however, why not consider quickly joining WWA and entering our Jade Ring contests? The entry deadline is June 15.
