Which school board candidates make the grade?
Janesville School District voters will choose from among six candidates for three seats on the school board Tuesday.
These unpaid positions are not for the faint of heart. The board in recent years has tackled multimillion-dollar deficits. Although budget estimates for the next school year vary, the board likely will wrestle another sizable deficit. Board members must decide how to offer the best educational quality while balancing concerns about tax increases. They’ll face decisions about whether to expand charter schools and international outreach and how to pay for technology upgrades at a time when the state is capping district revenues.
All three incumbents are seeking re-election. They are Karl Dommershausen, Kristin Hesselbacher and Peter Severson. They face three challengers in Diane Eyers, Fredrick Jackson and Cathy Myers. The top three vote-getters Tuesday will be elected.
Which candidates do you like best? Do the incumbents deserve to retain their seats? Why or why not?
We’ll share our perspectives in our endorsement editorial Sunday.
