Janesville residents should appreciate that seven viable candidates—including one write-in candidate—are running for four seats on the city council in Tuesday’s election. Each has likeable qualities.

Maybe you don’t agree.

On the ballot are incumbents Sam Liebert and DuWayne Severson, as well as challengers Julie Broda, Brian Fitzgerald, Douglas Marklein and Jerry Smythe. Former Councilman Yuri Rashkin has registered as a write-in candidate.

This race took on even more importance in recent days, when the city and its economic development director parted ways and word came that City Manager Eric Levitt is the lone finalist for the vacant city manager job in Simi Valley, Calif. That means on Tuesday we’ll be selecting a majority of council members who will not only help decide how to staff economic development but likely choose our next city manager.

Which four candidates do you believe are best suited for these tasks and leading our city forward?
