Should airport tower stay open?
After all the fear fanning over the federal budget sequester, most Janesville residents look around and ask, “Where’s the problem?” Well, a potential one would be the possible closing of the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport’s control tower.
A decision is expected this week on whether the Federal Aviation Administration will close 200 towers to save $600 million.
Could closure of the tower at Janesville’s airport pose safety concerns? Could it hinder economic development?
Reporter Jim Leute provided the latest details in Tuesday’s Gazette.
We’ll share our perspectives in our editorial Thursday.

One does not have to be rich to fly an airplane. I am a long ways from being rich and I have owned two small planes and have flown into both controlled airports and uncontrolled. One needs to know how to use both and my first experience was with the Rock County Airport when I was taking my first flying lesions. I can say from experience that a tower can save your life if you are in trouble. Keeping the towers running for a year is less money than what is spent on our wars in one day. It is sad that so many things are happening to help turn Janesville into a ghost town.

Who cares if its uncontrolled. I drive by all the time and rarely even see one plane there. It isnt O'hare. I say close the whole place down and make a drag strip out of it.... it will get much more use.

I have flown for many a yrs and mostly into uncontrolled airports. I have flown from one end of this country to the other and very rairly do I use a controlled airport. I feel safe because I know how to use my radio and keep my ears open for any traffic in the area. yes it is nice to talk to tower in heavy traffic because it is an extra set of eyes and with a airport with 3 runways, it is nice to know which is the active and don't have to worry about other traffic using all 3 runways. Madison and Rockford all have 3 runways and with heavier traffic it is nice to know which is active.

Good Morning. For those who support the control tower thank you. For those who don't: oldvet - Why is it a waste of taxpayer money? Sigma40 - you already got schooled. Woody - When was the last time you flew? Have you ever flown at the JVL airport? Have you ever flown in uncontrolled airspace that has 3 intersecting runways, 6 instrument approaches, 57,000 ops per year? Have you ever visited the control tower to see what we actually do to preserve safety and life?
Thursdays opinion was spot on Gazette! This Tower Manager wants to thank you for the support! We find out today if we are on the closure list.

Sigma0.40- Apparently you skipped over the word "tower" when you were reading the article. They are considering closing the TOWER, not the whole airport. Last year they handled 57,000 operations. (A take-off or a landing is considered an operation.) That averages over 156 each day. (That means a WHOLE BUNCH more than 4).

Busy? HAHA! How many planes fly out every day? 4? Close it and save some money. Rockford or Madison is not far to go if someone needs an airport.

Absolutely
This is a very busy airport and a vital Key to many local businesses not just in Rock County. This move is saving pennies while potentially costing many Dollars.
