Was Challenge Program expansion a good idea?
We can understand some criticism of the Janesville School Board’s decision Tuesday, on a 5-4 vote, to expand the Challenge Program to the third grade starting next fall at Madison Elementary School. After all, spending on a group of students considered “special,” whether it’s those on the higher or lower end of achievers, drains available money that could help educate the vast majority of students in the middle.
Does that mean the expansion—coming after two votes to expand it to both the third and fourth grades failed to gain board approval—doesn’t have merits? We’ll share our perspectives in our editorial Friday.
