Working with or against Walker?
I noticed a couple of roadblocks of late along the seemingly downhill path to recall Gov. Scott Walker.
Walker received standing ovations before and after his speech about education reform plans at the 2012 State Education Convention in Milwaukee on Jan. 19. If his budget cuts to education were as draconian as the teachers unions would have you believe, why did he get standing ovations from some 2,000 school board members, district administrators and school business managers at this convention? Wouldn’t polite and respectful applause been sufficient without standing?
And while the unions and recall supporters might have you believe that Walker is as good as gone, results of a Marquette Law School poll released Wednesday, before Walker gave his second State of the State address, showed interesting details. Walker led Democratic challenger Kathleen Falk, expected challenger Sen. Tim Cullen of Janesville, and possible challengers Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and former Congressman Dave Obey, by between six and 10 percentage points.
The poll also showed 74 percent of respondents favored and 22 percent opposed requiring state workers to pay more for pension and health benefits. The results were much closer when respondents were asked if they supported limiting state employee unions’ ability to bargain over benefits and nonwage issues. Forty-eight percent favored that, and 47 percent opposed.
I imagine Walker recall supporters would have hoped for results more favorable to their cause.
Speaking of being respectful, protesters who repeatedly tried to disrupt Walker’s State of the State address by shouting and even calling him a “liar” from the gallery before being ousted likely did nothing to help the recall effort. Neither did those chanting and beating a drum in the Capitol rotunda loud enough to be heard in the Assembly Chambers. Maybe you disagree, but I believe this foolishness, disrespect for the office and lack of civil discourse will do nothing to sway residents to vote against Walker whenever a recall election comes.
In The Gazette's editorial Tuesday, we'll share our perspectives on the proposed education reforms Walker was discussing Jan. 19 and in recent days.

Walker has done a lot he never mentioned he would do, and hasn't done what he promised: bring jobs to Wisconsin. Our neighbors to our east are recovering faster than we, but we remain behind even then. Where are these high-paying, family sustaining jobs? We've lost jobs under him.

*
Scott Walker is not a leader of people, he is a divider of the populace.
*
Scott Walker lets his press secretary (the one granted immunity under a criminal John Doe investigation) do his talking, which are half-a**ed excuses and revisionist history.
*
Scott Walker will never take your personal call, but he will take one right now from out-of-stater willing to write a BIG CHECK.
*
Scott Walker is not a statesman, he is a career politician.
*
Scott Walker promised you jobs, but he spends his time out of state collection contributions so he can save his own job.
*
Indictments and the John Doe hangs over his head.

Wisconsin put a clown in office that reminds me of Mel Brooks' "Governor" character in "Blazing Saddles" playing paddle ball with his pants around his knees.

All I am saying is we deserve better than Scott Walker.

Mr Peck,
Please tell us why in your article/blog you fail to post the statistics about disagreement with cutting education funding. You include other parts of the poll and leave out that very key detail, why? The polling on that issue is very telling as well.
•38 percent favored and 55 percent opposed limiting the number of people eligible for the BadgerCare health assistance program
•29 percent favored and 65 percent opposed reductions in state aid to public school
Pretty key issues to just leave out, dont you think?

Greg,
Why is it that you and your paper refuse to condemn the thuggish behavior of your fellow right-wing extremists? Why no condemnation of the destruction of recall petitions? How about the death threats made toward petition circulators? How about the rock (attached to a right-wing political message) thrown through the window of a recall-backing Madison business? How about the violent rhetoric ("And when we get done, they are going to be black and blue!") employed by former Governor Tommy Thompson at a recent pro-Walker rally? Do you endorse these behaviors? If not, why have you not condemned them?
I am a proud Democrat who backs the recall effort, but I am willing criticize and condemn those with whom I agree politically who engage in counterproductive and uncivil behaviors. I'd like to see you and your paper do the same.

Greg,
I'd have to say you appear to be easily impressed.
1) A standing ovation? I assume you checked the credentials of all that attended, they were all Wisconsin "school board members, district administrators and school business managers", right? Funny how we're hearing from these same ovation givers that Walker's "tools" will do them no good in the future. And a governor in trouble over his education spending cuts would never think of inviting a friendly crowd to this little get together.
2) The Marquette poll. Did you take the time to read their full discloser? A quick read shows they don't reveal WHERE the phone calls were placed to; Statewide? A particular area code? Just the City of Waukesha? Demographics is a wonderful thing when your intent is to slant a poll.
3) Those darn protesters! " foolishness, disrespect for the office and lack of civil discourse " Walker gets exactly what he gives, he owes Wisconsin's citizens respect but must earn his, he's done neither. Maybe while you're at it you can explain to us why the Walker Administration made only 12 gallery seats available to the general public, you know, the general public Walker is supposed to represent.

I do not like the outcome of the Packer game on Sunday January 15th 2012 and DEMAND a REPLAY.
The New York Giants did not allow the Packers to score enough points during the allotted time.
If we can collect signatures to equal 1/2 the capacity of Lambeau Field we can force the NFL to arrange for a REPLAY of the game.
When we have the required signatures then we can file them with the NFL to force them into another NFC Divisional Playoff game on the grounds that I am unhappy that my team lost.
In the New Wisconsin Recall Tradition, please pass this along to ensure we have enough signatures.

Dont need analogies Sigma to understand that the contentions about "standing ovations" at the conference in question here are wildly overstated to make a political point.
A standing O would include everyone in the room, or a wild ovation for him. The fact is that it just didnt happen that way. I guess some of the folks in the room maybe even half stood for him, but try again to remember that school board members across the state are of the likes of a few previously named ones here that are simple idealogues that have very little if any interest in what's best for educating kids. Getting 20% vote to stay on the School board isnt too hard to do in any community. Which is the problem with how these people get elected. There will always be 20% that vote for guys like Bill S because they believe the same things ideologically that he does. No matter how democratic Janesville is (about 60/40 blue). so for anyone to act like this type of standing O means much is someone playing an ideological tune, plain and simple. Lets see him go to a WEAC conference and not get tomatoes thrown at him. Does anyone think he really has that type of courage? I certainly don't!!

Greg,
Standing ovation? Certainly NOT from everyone there, as I have a few friends that were in ATTENDENCE and others who have a little inside knowledge and there certainly wasn't an overwhelming ovation from those in attendance, and those there certainly didn't agree with his cuts to education. Of course when you get into a room full of school board members around the state , try to remember that many of them are like Bill S and DuWayne S in Janesville, that have political reasons for being there , and certainly not educational ones.
Of course Mr Pecck you failed to realize that the respondents in the poll where almost 70% OPPOSED to the governors draconian cuts to education (1.6 billion) in his budget. WHy did you fail to mention those numbers since this particular blog is addressing education , maybe you should try to address those numbers in that EXCAT SAME POLL!! My God!! Wouldn't it be nice if independents and Democrats could find a candidate worthy of their support. The same tiresome list is not very appealing to the average voter. Walker has contributed to great turmoil in our state and has hired people of very questionable character. His trust level is very low and it even discredits reputations of other politicians in the state. Without credible adversaries what are the chances of meaningful reform in our state? More of the same is not acceptable as Wisconsin moves forward.

This is basically Custer’s Last Stand for the unions. If Walker survives the recall, it sends a clear signal that most citizens are tired of watching public unions suck up tax dollars and invest them in political platforms they find abhorrent; that they expect public employees to pay their fair way for health care and retirement; and they find the alternating goon-like and childish behaviour of unions to be disgusting. It will also embolden other states to start reining in their own runaway public unions. It will, more than anything else, show the enormous contrast of Wisconsin balancing their budget and becoming fiscally responsible, and Illinois continuing to increase spending of money they don’t have. If Walker wins, expect to see more business heading north across the border.
But the unions have a real quandary, because they not only want to get rid of Walker, they also want to re-elect Obama. Both will be uphill battles. Where will their invest their diminishing war chest?
Either way, expect commercial television to become unwatchable in the coming months, as attack ads from both sides gain momentum. And expect more rude, childish behaviour from the recall folks. Which is fine, because it will certainly help sway votes towards Walker.

I agree that the childish protest behavior is not going to sway voters to recall Walker, and that they are an embarrassment to Wisconsin's image. I would especially expect teachers to show mature behavior in public forums. Did their teachers fail to teach them about Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and civil disobedience?
Whether you approve of Walker or not, throwing tantrums, tossing beer, or screeching from the gallery creates news stories with a very negative image of Wisconsin to investors and employers. I agree Greg. Despite what I think of Walker I still respect him & think he deserves respect. However so many people don't have an ounce of respect for anything or anyone anymore. Many years ago I had to stop on the interstate for George W's motorcade. A relative of mine said, "I would never do such thing." I told her I had to because the road was closed to allow for the motorcade to pass. Despite how I felt about him I was still in awe to see the Presidential motorcade. It's not something you see every day & it was a proud moment despite that I didn't support his views.
