Welcome columnist Steven Walters

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Monday, January 30, 2012 - 11:55 a.m.

Stan Milam, The Gazette’s one-time Capitol correspondent, has returned to our reporting staff. That necessitates ending his longtime Saturday columns on our Opinion page. Milam most often focused on state issues. In his place, we’re introducing Steven Walters of Cottage Grove.

We’ve been following Walters’ columns in the Sunday Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and his columns will appear in Monday’s Gazettes. Walters’ column today is of particular interest to area readers because it involves state Sen. Neal Kedzie and the role the Elkhorn Republican is playing in controversial wetlands and mining legislation.

Walters has been a senior producer for WisconsinEye, the nonprofit public affairs channel, since 2009. He covered the state Capitol for the Milwaukee Sentinel and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel between 1988 and 2009. He also teaches a UW-Madison journalism class. After covering the Iowa Legislature in the 1970s, he was managing editor of the Waukesha Freeman.

Best yet, while we weren’t posting Milam’s columns on our website, we will be posting Walters’. Soon we’ll have a separate column category for Walters under our website’s Opinion material.

We trust that you’ll enjoy Walters’ insights into state government.

Does Stan M work full-time with Bliss again or is he still with The Studer Group? (or both)

Thanks for the info, Greg. I wasn't implying that columnists required an extra fee for having their columns online. I was referring to the Gazette's policy of restricting some content to print-only and thought younger journalists are more likely to embrace the future of journalism, which is on the web, and not be content with having their work restricted to the declining circulation of newsprint.

janesvillecomments: Walters requested no extra fee for posting online, so we're doing so. He was the lone person we targeted to fill this spot.

I'm wondering if the Gazette is starting to acquiesce to the inevitable by putting Mr. Walter's column on the web site or if posting the column on the paper's web site was a requirement stipulated by all the favorable candidates for the job?

Milam is reporting ? So far, he's spotlighted the Democrat Party of Walworth County with half of the article consisting of Cullen quotes, as well as the Democrat "response" to the State of the State speech. I thought he was either on Cullen's campaign staff, or a Democrat blogger.
