Are you ready for the big one?

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Tuesday, December 18, 2012 - 10:10 a.m.

I came downstairs at 5 a.m. today and flipped on the TV while doing my stretches. A meteorologist for Channel 27 was showing a map covering much of Rock County, including the Janesville area, with a section that can expect 4 to 7 inches of snow Wednesday into Thursday. He expects the Madison area to get even more.

Blowing and drifting likely will cause travel problems.

After the drought we suffered through most of this year, shouldn’t we be welcoming any precipitation? Are you looking forward to the recreational opportunities of skiing and/or snowblowing that a good snowfall would bring, even if it at first means shoveling and plowing and slippery driving conditions? Have you been hoping for a white Christmas? Well, it sounds like it’s coming.

(Unless, of course, that little thing with the Mayan calendar is correct. Then, guess we shouldn't even waste time shoveling, eh?)

Or do you think meteorologists have been wrong too often to trust?

Blizzard —
A severe weather condition characterized by high winds and reduced visibilities due to falling or blowing snow.
~
The U.S. National Weather Service specifies a wind of 35 miles per hour or greater, sufficient snow in the air to reduce visibility to less than 0.25 miles.
~
Earlier definitions also included a condition of low temperatures, on the order of 20°F or lower, or 10°F or lower for a severe blizzard.
~
Now days, the weatherperson doesn’t include a temperature. The term BLIZZARD is meaningless without a temperature to justify the term BLIZZARD.
~
The word is use only to frighten people, not inform them. This is the typical attitude of the news media – frighten, not inform. If people had believed the news and weather media, the death toll in Hurricane Sandy death would not be above 110 people.

I've often regretted not becoming a tv weatherman. It seems like they are wrong about 75% of the time and still get to keep their jobs. About the only thing better then that would be to be in Congress.
I'm keeping my sun tan lotion and lawn chair handy just in case.

saxcat70 - I've got a snow blower I called "Snow-Bird" because, well, it's called a Snow-Bird. Someday I hope to find all the parts and put it back together again. I think it's from 1965. It's red, too!
Here's a cool dude with his Snow-Bird!

Don't stretch too vigorously Greg. The last thing you need is another pulled muscle before all the BS (big snow).

I'll believe it when I see it. I think it's just a bunch of hype for the first snowfall.
