Does hope remain for reopening teachers contract?
Are 25 teachers willing to defy their union leadership and put a proposed contract concession to a full vote of the Janesville Education Association membership? If they do so by signing a petition and delivering it to JEA President Dave Parr by Tuesday, Sept. 20, they could force such a vote before the Sept. 29 deadline for any contract change.
Teachers attending a Monday meeting with school board President Bill Sodemann rejected a plan to reopen the union contract. The board’s latest proposal: It would guarantee no cuts to teaching positions next year except for those involving enrollment declines if the teachers agree to pay 2.9 percent of their salaries toward their pensions this year and 5.8 percent starting next year.
Is that a fair proposal? Why or why not?
We’ll share our perspective in our editorial Thursday.
