Landfill stench is nothing to love
My sister came to visit a couple of years ago, got up early to head home and suggested we call the utility company because she smelled what she thought was a natural gas leak in our neighborhood.
Sure enough, when I walked the dog a little while later, an Alliant Energy truck was cruising the predawn darkness. I stopped to talk to the driver, and he said there was no gas leak; instead, the stench was apparently coming all the way from the landfill.
In our story last week, I learned that the city’s operations director, John Whitcomb, lives just a couple of blocks from us, between the fairgrounds and Janesville Craig High School. Our homes are nearly two miles from the landfill as the turkey vultures fly, but he, too, admits he can sometimes smell the landfill from his yard.
What can the city do about that stench, and what more can it be doing? That will be the topic of our editorial Friday.

A few hundred of those pine-tree air fresheners should do the trick.

STOP outsiders from using landfill, sealing the edges will not stop the smell. Its whats people (especially from other cities) are dumping, they dont care. pretty soon our air (I think it is already) and our ground water will be contaminated. We will be another love canal

I first noticed the problem a year ago Christmas as I drove down Milton Avenue near KFC. I called and reported a possible "gas" leak to the police department. Later, I found that it was a possible landfill leak.
It may taste like chicken (rotten) but it sure doesn't smell like it!
What will it smell like in another year and a half? But it is OUR waste after all, isn't it? - Not!

I don't live in Jvll and I'm not familiar with this but I have been in landfills many MANY times and I can tell you I've smelled a LOT of stuff thats MUCH worse than a landfill, the smell didn't actually bother me at all....There has to be greater problems to solve than some landfill odor....My first reaction is "get a grip", but thats just me, no offense meant...I don't, however, think that dumping should be made "too cheap" for outside dumpers.

Hubby said could smell it today all the way down to Milton Av Fire Station.
couldn't we dig a new hole somewhere for 2.5 million?
bobb- lets spend $10,000 for a report to report what the committee is reporting.

The residents should DEMAND to know what the city is REALLY doing about this problem. The people Stan Milum has on his show and was asked about this problem say "we are working on it".

Hey, be positive!
I'm sure this pervasive and odoriferous stench that seems to settle in over much of the city almost every night now will draw in new businesses and employers...LIKE FLIES!
Then again, maybe it's just the decaying carcass of GMAD?!

Perhaps in always looking to the city to solve problems, the real problem is what WE throw into that landfill! How many people compost their kitchen waste? How many use cloth bags instead of plastic when they shop? How often do you toss something out that could have easily been repurposed, reused, or repaired? Too much smelly trash isn't ALWAYS a government problem. As with most issues, if we first look in the mirror, we may not like what we see but it will help us realize where some issues begin so we can solve the problem TOGETHER.

Allowing the trash trucks from other cities to dump here is a joke especially what they are being charged,If JVL would charge more they would go elsewhere, thus reducing the smell somewhat and allowing more dump space for Janesvillians in the future,It happens everywhere, I was a garbolajist for 15 years and saw it every day,we are being used.

City of Parks....NO...City of Stink!!!! This problem will get better with time. All we have to do is wait for the dump to get filled up and covered with dirt and the escaping gases to be properly processed. Just wait....

They need to do a better job of capturing the gas and either using or selling it.

"What can the city do about that stench, and what more can it be doing?" What IS the city doing about it?
