Brett Favre should shut his mouth.

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Friday, October 30, 2009 - 11:01 a.m.

If I had a ticket to Lambeau Field on Sunday, would I boo or cheer when Brett Favre takes the field?

I would lean toward booing, but to show a little class, I probably would just remain silent. However, I can understand the passion and sentiments of those Packer fans who will still cheer Brett.

Still, did you catch what Favre said last week?

"Physically, and from a talent level, this is the best team I've ever been on."

What? Better than the 1996 team that won the Super Bowl, with the Minister of Defense and all?

I admit, today's Vikings are strong. The offensive line is solid, the defensive front is impressive, and Adrian Peterson might become the best runner of all time. I realized all they needed to move to the next level (the Super Bowl?) was a capable quarterback. In Favre, if he stays healthy, they have that.

Favre apparently has backed off that comment a bit, saying he wasn't trying to slight his 1996 teammates.

Too late. Here's a response in Tuesday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from retired safety LeRoy Butler, one of my all-time favorite players:

"To say that the team he's on now, after seven games, is better than the '96 team--that's just preposterous. Not only did we have the No. 1 defense in 1996, but we had No. 1 special teams. I bleed green and gold so much. I don't want somebody to beat my team. This is my team. I played 181 games, I was there before Brett, before Reggie White and Ron Wolf and everybody. This team means a lot to me, so when somebody calls up on the radio show: 'Brett Favre is the one that turned everything around'--it's almost a disrespectful slap in the face."

Can the Packers beat the Vikings on Sunday? Yes. But they have to stop making stupid penalties and avoid turnovers--essentially play a perfect game. Applying a little pressure on their old teammate this time around would help, as well.

It remains to be seen if the Packers are capable of doing all of this. Since the regular season started, they haven't proven it.

All I can say is the Packers made a big mistake. They should've welcomed Favre back with open arms and trade Rodgers. Why are they so high on Rodgers? He sucks, he has no pocket presence at all, he don't know how to throw the ball away. he will never amount to anything. All Aaron Rodgers is is the second coming of Lynn Dickie.

Wow.
Did I say Brett Favre couldn't play anymore?
Let's see...nope.

Did I say the Packers would win?
Let's see...did they play that perfect game? (How about that kickoff team! How about that pass rush!)...nope.

So I should eat crow for...what?

Gee, I like watching Brett, too. The guy still plays with the enthusiasm of a teenager. But as a diehard Packer fan, I just hate to see him wearing the color of the arch rival (sorry, Bear fans) and pumping his fists in excitement while at Lambeau.

Did I use a provocative headline to entice readers to my blog?
Guilty.

I just thought his comment, at this point in the season, was disrespectful to his 1996 teammates. If the Vikings win it all--and I wouldn't bet against them--then he can make such a comparison/statement and I wouldn't begrudge it.

By the way, I like the idea others have suggested: That if Rodgers had played with the Vikings and Favre with the Packers on Sunday, the outcome likely would have been similar. You can’t tell which is the better quarterback at this point in their careers, but the Vikings are obviously the better team this year.

Okay Guys...As a Bear fan and trying to be neutral and all...MAN DID HE LOOK GOOD FOR A 40 YEAR OLD GUY OR WHAT. If he was the same age as he was with the Pac in 96, given the team he is on now....the world would be his oyster and MIN would probably be undefeated. Just one persons observation....As a Bear fan I hope they all get the FLU...just kidding, seriously these guys are the best in the NFC. Great job Brett I look forward to your off season whineing and indecisivenes, so I may go on to hate you again like a true Bears fan....LOL...again kidding

Ok Mr.Peck what quarterback helped take this team to the 96'superbowl,so realize that without him they probably, mostlikely would not have made it.This is why a packer fan cries is because their lost without their hero.Face it! the packers are going down the toilet and you've got mike & ted to thank for that.

Love Favre ! Have and will always watch whatever team he plays for. It's a job people, one he is very good at. I have taken a lot of flack for following him since he left GB (kicked out) but it is so worth it to watch him. He smacked GB down twice in one month. GB will not make it to the playoffs but I would not be surprised if Farve went to the Super bowel again.

Ok unruly Packer Fans, get out the crying towels. Brett Favre will be a great player no matter what team he's playing for and he's in it for the love of the game, not because you OWN him Green Bay. I liked the classy Green Bay fans that held up signs saying "Brett we still love ya!" On the other hand,. . . for all the cry baby fans that are still complaining about Brett Favre and telling him to "shut his mouth" ya need to grow up and get the hell over it!

Thank you, Brett and Viking teammates! I loved every minute of it. I grew up in Wisconsin and until Favre left, always kept the Packers as No. 1 in my book. Because of that, I can understand why some Green Bay fans felt a need to boo Brett when he first appeared on the field for warmups and again when the Viking offense first entered the game. However, I can't for the life of me figure out what the Packer fans thought they were achieving by continuing to boo Favre when Minnesota was ahead 24-3 (or whatever it was at that point). By then, the booing only made the Packer fans look bad.

Packers fans need to stop living in the past....all they do is dwell on the SuperBowl team from 13 years ago. Well you know what, that's done and over with and has nothing to do with today. Favre never mentioned the '96 team when he made that statement, just typical reaction and media coverage around here. "you can't say that because our team won the superbowl 13 years ago"...whaaa, get over it.

"It remains to be seen if the Packers are capable of doing it all of this." Is that what you meant to write? It just seems a little bit clumsy. Oh, and by the way, it is generally accepted that everything that has not yet happened remains to be seen. Finally, I contest the assertion that the Vikings will have to play a perfect game to win. I am calling the Pack to win this game and cover the -3 line. Not because I think the Pack is the better team, but because of the technicals. As an ex-book; one of my favorite angles was to go against teams coming off very physical games. Back in the day when Tampa had that bone crushing defense under Tony Dungey; you could always play AGAINST a team the week after they played Tampa; as players would often be beat down from the game, and not fully recovered. It was a very powerful angle that was never really figured into the Vegas line.
.
Same sort of angle does apply here. Minnesota is coming off games against Pittsburgh and Baltimore respectively. Two of the top defenses in the league (they were ranked one and two last year). Green Bay comes in VERY rested up here. A Bye, Detroit, and Cleveland respectively. Detroit and Cleveland having two of the very worse defenses in football.
.
The Pack should simply be better rested, and have more energy for this game that will be a VERY emotional divisional game. I would not be all to surprised if they win handily. I think they win the battle, but not the war; however. As I think Minnesota will have the better record by seasons end.

Your going to tell me that a back who was injury prone at OU is a better back then Jim Brown, Gayle Sayers, Earl Campbell, Walter Payton???? RIIIIIIIIIGHT. How about even real old school Curly Lambeau or the true legend of the galloping ghost; Red Grange. Christ these guys had 10x the heart of any of these backs in today's game!
