Do state lawmakers deserve a break?

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Monday, November 2, 2009 - 4:30 p.m.

Do lawmakers deserve a possible break of 10½ weeks—with pay? That is the scenario as the Senate and Assembly floor period is scheduled to end Thursday, and the two bodies don’t reconvene until Jan. 19.

Of course, Gov. Jim Doyle says he might call them back for a special session on education yet this month.

Do lawmakers deserve such a long break? Should we be glad they’re out of the Capitol? We’ll share our views in Tuesday’s editorial.

"WHY do we NOT move to PAY for a part-time legislature since our LEGISLATORS work PART-TIME?"

Hmmmm....would that involve the legislature having to initiate some sort of action in order to get the ball rolling?

And that's about as likely to happen as....what?... Brett Favre getting traded to the Packers?

It sure would be nice if they sat down to develop a plan to make our state more attractive to business. I understand that state services need to be paid for but if the people of WI really knew day to day how much more in taxes and fees they are paying (property, sales, income, various licenses) compared to other states, they would overthrow state government. The effect of over taxation is huge when businesses are deciding where to locate. Give me one good reason why a business would want to move to WI. To be part of The Peoples Republic of Madison? To have government intrude on every aspect of the process, to tell them how much they have to pay and whom to hire?

When the last business has left Wisconsin, please turn out the lights.

WHY do we NOT move to PAY for a part-time legislature since our LEGISLATORS work PART-TIME? Time for some accountability!!!!! Thanks to the Janesville Gazette and Greg Peck for this incisive and poignant editorial.

It's pretty silly to expect them to "address" an issue like unemployment -- which is a nationwide, even worldwide problem right now -- just by staying in session. It's not like there are any magical fixes, and there's already a state stimulus in place this year. The fact is that unemployment will not subside quickly unless we get boom-year levels of economic growth, and nobody expects that for a year or two.
.
(Also, the state does balance its budget, as required by the state constitution.)
.
I also find it amusing that the very same poster wants them to (apparently) extend unemployment bennies AND (apparently) lower taxes. Can I have a pony too?

Maybe we should put them to work driving snowplows, shoveling sidewalks, or cutting lawns?

Of course, they could also help build that new ice arena too ;-)

I agree with Eman, give them a 52-week vacation.

I am one who is very comfortable with lawmakers staying at home. This may sound simplistic, but do we need more laws, more government and more intrusion in our lives? We don’t enforce the laws we have now! There are so many tax laws and building codes and environmental laws that contradict themselves now it’s enough to cross a cop’s eyes. When these guys are at home is when I rest easy. In our states last two elections the people of this state put many liberals in the Assembly and legislature. Now their car insurance is going WAY UP, their telephone bills are going WAY UP, unemployment is WAY UP, job losses have skyrocketed and we see no end to the carnage from the left. The longer these non-representing representatives stay home, the better of Wisconsin will be.

I think they should have a special session to focus entirely on the economic situation in Wisconsin. I have no idea how it can be helped, but I'd rather have them work on the issue than take 10 weeks off.

With SO many issues facing Wi. families(UNEMPLOYMENT benefits, jobs, taxes, endless list)These clowns think we are to sit by,until there(paid for by US)vacation is over, then business as usual?I so hope each, and everyone is resoundly voted out next election."Serve" as long as some have with little,or no good to Wi. families is a crime in it self.Constant turning their backs on us,when to honestly face us is what we expect, deserve as they were elected to do is not asking too much.I say enjoy your vacation, come elections may vacation become permanent.

No, they should fire all of them. They expect me to live within a budget but they can not.
