Rockin' Reunions
In a follow up to the previous blog about The Milton Rock, one thing I forgot to mention is that The Rock often signals the summer weekend that an MHS reunion is taking place.
For example, this artwork appeared on The Rock this morning:
If history is any indication, this means there is a 20-year class reunion going on somewhere in town. If you're a Milton grad, you never quite grow out of painting The Rock.
Note that the artists included the former sports team name of "Redmen." One hopes (the one being me) that this is simply a little nostalgia taking place, and not a political statement. The name was changed 10 years ago. It's time to move on...

Rocky - I agree totally with your sentiment that there is nothing wrong with remembering the past as long as it doesn't get confused with the present or future. Well put!
Ceebear - Ironic you should say that. The point of my statement was that I hoped that the rock painters were just being a little nostalgic and not trying to stir up trouble again. I'm a class of 1980 Redmen grad myself, who was absolutely appalled by the crud that went on in 1999-2000 when people got so riled up about changing the name that they tried to recall the school board. I wish people could get that passionate about things that matter. Personally, I could care less about the name and I was glad the majority spoke at the ballot box during the recall election.

There are several items from the "redmen" era still around the school and district - one being a sign saying "welcome to redmen country" in the stadium. Nothing wrong with remembering the past - so long as it doesn't get confused with the present or future.

In 1989 Milton WERE the Redmen!! Why would they paint on the rock Redhawks?? Can Not believe some people would actually think there is anything political involved. They are very proud to call themselves the Redmen back then and still are today! I believe you are just trying to stir up trouble ( Jim Lyke) by looking too far into this!!

Why would the "leaders" listen about the Redmen issue, they sure as heck didn't listen to the majority who were against the ethanol plant. That is a different story altogether.
I was (am) a Redman, thank God! Class of 81, thank you.

I have never lived in Milton or attended a school near there, IMO it was rediculous to change the name from Redmen to Redhawks. The name was part of the schools history. To cow-tow to a small group in the name of political correctness has led this country astray. I recall many upset students, faculty and community members when this name change came about. How about leaders listening to the majority. This is old news but things of this nature are getting worse and worse.

In a few days the "REDMEN" will be painted over by a "P.C." parent or student.....and redhawk will replace it......
I often wonder how towns like Evill can continue to have a Satanic mascot (BLUE DEVILS) for thier school.....Aren't any of the religious groups "upset" about that?????

I agree! We graduated as Redmen, not Redhawks, so why not put Redmen on the rock? I like the rock's updated paint job, courtesy of the class of '87!

CONGRATS, JIM! Yes, confession is GOOD for the SOUL! IF I understand your statement, YOU are one of the Milton HS grads celebrating a 30th class reunion this weekend - correct?
I assume that your note of the ID, "Redmen" is historical and NOT POLITICAL... it is, isn't it?!
ENJOY the 2nd half of August 2009, JIM! Looking forward to your next posting... John
