La Crosse airport tower to remain open
The control tower at the La Crosse Municipal Airport will not be closing June 15, airport management learned today.
The Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration confirmed funding has been restored for 149 federal contract towers slated to shut down due to sequester cuts, La Crosse airport manager Clinton Torp said.
Torp said he had been hoping for such news since Congress passed legislation April 26 to end nation-wide furloughs of air traffic controllers that had trigger widespread flight delays. That same bill provided funding for the contract towers as well but left the decision to the DOT, Torp said.
The official notification today left Torp “relieved. relieved. Obviously the tower serves a very important function for the airport ... we’re happy to see it remain open.”
