SS Badger carferry kicks off sailing season
LUDINGTON, Mich. (AP) ó The S.S. Badger carferry has begun its sailing season after reaching a deal with regulators on releasing coal ash into Lake Michigan.
The Ludington Daily News reports that a crowd was on hand Monday morning at the Ludington dock as the 410-foot vessel took off for Manitowoc, Wis. Itís scheduled to return around 7 p.m.
About 100 passengers made the journey, along with truckers hauling wind turbine parts.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in March agreed to let the Badger continue dumping its waste ash into the lake for two more years while developing a system to store it onboard and disposing of it on land. The courts have yet to decide whether to accept the agreement.
Another Lake Michigan ferry service called Lake Express began its season Saturday.
