Both sides stake positions as budget debate starts
MADISON — Republicans and Democrats are staking the positions on Gov. Scott Walker’s two-year budget as the legislative committee that will vote on changes to the plan begins its review process.
Joint Finance Committee member state Sen. Jennifer Shilling of La Crosse listed numerous concerns Democrats have with the plan at the start of Tuesday’s hearing. She says Democrats are particularly concerned with Walker’s proposed income tax cut, Medicaid changes, and expansion of private school vouchers.
Walker’s top aide Mike Huebsch says Walker’s budget makes smart choices while investing in areas that will create jobs and make government more efficient.
The hearings are scheduled to continue into next week before the committee holds four public hearings across the state to gather input on Walker’s plan.
