JANESVILLE—The city of Janesville has scheduled downtown snow removal activities to start at about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

During this time, residents should refrain from parking in on-street stalls in the downtown area. Downtown business owners are encouraged to remove snow and ice from their sidewalks prior to snow removal activities.

Because you have 50 feet of sidewalk and the city has 350 miles of streets

Why is it we have 12 hours to shovel the walkway but the city can wait 24 to 36 hours to plow the street?

I have asked city workers about this before. The people that plow the streets also do the snow removal downtown. So after spending however many hours plowing, they need some sleep before they can remove snow from downtown.

"Did it maybe occur to you they will be downtown with heavy equipment hauling the snow out in dump trucks and were giving the local businesses a little time to get the snow off of their sidewalks and into the street so they could haul it all out at once?"

no,I didn't--now that makes sense.. I wish the article had been more specific. I digress and hereby rescind my previous post!

This article isn't about plowing the downtown streets, which by the way have already been plowed. It is about removing all the snow that was already plowed. In residential streets the snowbanks just keep getting larger and larger but in downtown the snow eventually has to be moved elsewhere. I believe it gets hauled off to the Dawson field parking lot. Rusty, my street rarely gets plowed either which is probably why neighbors don't even bother moving their cars off the road and the one business at the end of the street is always plowing their snow into and across the road leaving an even bigger mess.

dropdead - Did it maybe occur to you they will be downtown with heavy equipment hauling the snow out in dump trucks and were giving the local businesses a little time to get the snow off of their sidewalks and into the street so they could haul it all out at once? I'd be willing to bet they plowed but now need to remove the snow that is piled up for normal operations downtown. If you were in charge, how would you do it differntly so it is cost effective for all involved?

"my little out of the way street. It is not as important."
Until you require emergency services.

Our office leases several spots in the downtown area and I live in Janesville. I think they do a fabulous job moving the snow out of the downtown area in a timely fashion. They have a huge job and it probably takes them all night to do it. I can't imagine getting around downtown if they did not remove the snow. It would be almost impossible. As far as the residential streets I think they have done a fine job getting things cleared. I live on a street that is not heavily traveled and since I live in WI I have come to expect driving carefully on snow packed roads. I, and many others, understand that the city needs to focus on arterial streets and not my little out of the way street. It is not as important.

It may be worth noting that it is a violation of City of Janesville ord. to plow snow from your drive way into the street.

mtndew I agree with your thumbs down.
I used to work with a guy that was proud of blowing snow back out in the street. I asked him why and his reasoning was: "If they are going to plow snow in to my driveway, in your face. I'll just blow it right back out"

I would like to thank the city plow operators who do a good job in my neighborhood. A big thumbs down to several homeowners on my drive in to work who felt the need to snowblow their driveway out into the street AFTER the plows came thru creating snow packed speed bumps.

so according to city ordinance, i have 12 hours to shovel my wintry purview but the city won't even start downtown cleanup until 24 hours later? aren't the police station etc. downtown? what's with that? and yes, business owners, please remove snow and ice before the plows get there and put it all back again. ;)
