Walker invites fellow governors for Harley ride

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Tuesday, March 5, 2013 - 10:18 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker says he challenged his fellow governors to join him for a motorcycle ride when the National Governors Association meets in Milwaukee this summer.

Walker says Wisconsin will pay for the other governors to take training courses to ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Walker told reporters Tuesday several governors have already agreed to learn how to ride a motorcycle, and two others who already ride have accepted his invitation.

The NGA includes all 50 governors. The group’s 2013 meeting will take place in Milwaukee from Aug. 2 to Aug. 4.

Other plans for the meeting include having the governors take batting practice at Miller Park before the Milwaukee Brewers open a series against the Washington Nationals.

Wisconsin last hosted an annual meeting of the NGA in 1998.

Scott Walker is such a poseur and a weenie. Honestly, when his ilk get on board it's time to sell the bike and move on.

It is quite entertaining to read comments from people who OBVIOUSLY have not read the comments. Some chose to feed off the inaccurate story from the AP, because it makes them feel better about hating Walker.

How about thanking Harley for using this opportunity to showcase an American made product from Milwaukee?

Thank you, Harley Davidson, and also Governor Walker, for hosting the convention.

Why do the taxpayers have to foot the bill to teach Scott Walker's friends how to ride a motorcycle??
What happened to focusing on: Jobs? Education? Our Streets? And Walker expects us to re-elect him...Just another thing that makes ya go hummmm

I am responding to the "Walker invites fellow governors for Harley ride article" I want to address this particular quote: "Walker says Wisconsin will pay for the other governors to take training courses to ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles."

I feel it is sad that Governor Walker is using Wisconsin money for motorcycle training for up to 49 other governors considering he cut school budgets which affect our children and young adults.

I am proud that Harley-Davidson motorcycles are made in Milwaukee. It makes me happy that the governor wants to showcase them and the Brewers, as mentioned in the article. I also realize the cost of this training might not be much, but why couldn't Governor Walker (since he threw out the challenge) pay this out of his own pocket?

I don't understand how anybody, left or right, can approve of spending taxpayer dollars to train these people to ride motorcycles. They are coming to Wisconsin for the conference regardless of the ride and will spend the same either way. Taxpayers should not be paying for this. The king has made his decision however and we all will pay for this. Ridiculous!

Wigs.....you are such a poser tool! Nice try though--no one who actually rides a motorcycle would describe it as "driving a motorcycle". While you're "driving" your imaginary motorcycle around fantasyland, you might want to go back to elementary school and learn how to spell "license". It will definitely prevent you from looking so foolish in the future....:)

It's about time people start thinking about our president. The money he spends on his vacation @ the same time his wife going her own way on vacation on our dime. And he gives millions of dollars to countries that hate the USA. But the dems have no problem with this. The president is taking this country down a slippery slope. Plus he wants to make illegals legal. That is going to kill social security and health benifits for the rest of us.

Some of the libs are so funny. You people act as if riding a motorcycle is an ability that few possess. Not everyone is so sheltered. Most of the people I know, have learned how to ride at one time or another in their life. I would bet that the majority of people that take Walker up on this offer will fall into that category. Please calm down and find something else to whine about--it's one thing you anti-Walker people are very good at!:)

Uh oh....I had a comment removed. Suspect it was because I used an inappropriate word. To rephrase, let them ride on the back of a motorcycle while someone else is driving rather than pay for lessons so they can learn to ride themselves. Newbies riding together in a pack can be very dangerous! I know of too many new riders that have dumped their expensive motorcylces early on. Harleys are big and heavy machines. Not like the Honda 750 Shadow Aero that I had. It looked like a Harley wannabe, but was light and unbelievably well balanced. Perfect beginners bike!

First of all, even if the state were paying for it, which isn't clear at this point, does anyone have any idea what kind of money this conference will bring to the state? We're talking about governors, staff, and volunteer from all 50 states plus maybe their families, press, and god knows who else paying to get here (it's estimated the conference will bring 1200 people to WI for those 3 days), to stay here, to eat here, get around while they're here, and possibly for some entertainment while they're here. These kinds of conferences bring in a huge tax base (economic impact is estimated at $1.2 million for the 3 day conference), not to mention the promotion for WI. I'm pretty sure the tax revenue generated by this will be exponentially higher than whatever minimal fees the state may or may not be paying for motorcycle training for the governors that actually wanted to participate (Kutter's beginners classes are $299 according to their website), of which there are only a handful at this time. Worst case scenario, Walker and 3 other governors already know how to ride, that means the state pays for 46 governors if every single one participates, which is unlikely anyway, at $299 a pop that $13754....and the conference is estimated to bring $1.2 million in dollars spent here, plus the promotion of WI and a WI company.

Instead of believing everything the AP says, why not read some other sources. This statement in the above AP story is NOT correct.

"Walker says Wisconsin will pay for the other governors to take training courses to ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles."
......

Walker will be host to nation's governors in August

"The National Governors Association will hold its annual meeting in early August in Milwaukee and Gov. Scott Walker said Tuesday he has big plans for his fellow governors.

Walker said all of the nation's governors have been offered the chance to learn how to ride a Harley. Walker said Harley has offered each of the governors lessons at a Harley dealership close to each of the state capitols.

Some governors have already agreed to take lessons to learn how to ride a motorcycle safely.

On Thursday, Aug. 1, an event will be held at Miller Park. On Friday, the governors will gather at the Harley museum.

On Saturday, an event will be held at Discovery World, Walker said.

According to the NGA, this will only be the third time the governors have met in Wisconsin. The last two times were 1914 and 1988.

But on the other hand, if you think about it, governors, such as Doyle, go to other countries like China to sell our products, so maybe this would fall into that category of marketing Wisconsin products.
