JANESVILLE—Details are still being withheld this evening, but Janesville police have confirmed that one person has died after a two-vehicle crash this afternoon on the Afton Road overpass on Janesville’s south side.

Janesville police are still on scene working on an accident reconstruction for a crash that happened around 4 p.m. today on the Afton Road overpass, which spans Highway 11.

Janesville Fire Department and Janesville police worked to shut down the overpass this afternoon. A Janesville police officer who was blocking traffic at the westbound Highway 11 exit ramp to Afton Road said the crash involved two vehicles.

He said multiple people were apparently transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center with injuries. One of the people in the crash has been pronounced dead, police have confirmed.

Police have not released details of the crash, including the names of the person killed and those injured. Authorities are working to notify family of the deceased, a police department administrative assistant said.

Earlier today, crews were working on scene, where at least one vehicle appeared to be sideways and pushed up against the south rail of the overpass.

The Gazette will provide more details as they become available.
